White Oak Service Rifle build w/color fill

Postby Collector1337420 on Tue Jul 23, 2013 3:36 pm

Finally. After 2 months of planning and 7 months of waiting, my project is almost completed. I'm still missing one item though. To anyone who can spot what it is, I am in need of recommendations that meet the proper regulations.

The upper is obviously a 20" White Oak Armament Service Rifle, pre-ban, flat top, with double pinned, match carry handle.

Attached to a Mega Arms lower, color filled by me, with DPMS parts and Geissele Hi-Speed Service Rifle trigger.

Still unfired. According to the FAQ, the "break in" is nothing more than shoot a couple groups to zero, about 15-20 rounds. Go home. Clean. That's it.

So, now I need a range south of the cities that is 600 yards... when I feel ready to attempt it.

Guessing you're talking about a sling.

Great rifle, have the same upper with the pinned A2 1/4x1/4 MOA rear sight.

Question though - are you swapping the trigger guard and grip over to standard milspec parts to compete?

White Oak Service Rifle build w/color fill

If I were starting over with a service rifle, I honestly would go with a GI web sling before trying anything else. Cheap, fast, infinitely adjustable, and conform to both NRA and CMP SR rules. You can find them for about $12 bucks. You can always spend more later if you don't like it, but you'll probably like it!

And yeah, your pistol grip and trigger guard don't meet CMP rules, though I don't think you'd get any flak over it, at least at the local level. Unless you win the match, of course....

Yup. We have a winner.

I would like leather for that reason also, but I'm concerned about flexibility.

Cheap is good. Where would be a good place to get one?

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured. The grip is easy enough to change, even though I dislike the standard GI grip.

The trigger guard is what annoys me the most. I hate the stupid gap. I'm only changing it if someone's who opinion actually matters complains about it. I doubt I'll be winning any matches anytime soon anyway.

There's about 15 ways to assemble a leather service rifle sling, and all of them are wrong except mine. :D

I recommend the web slings to new shooters, unless they are willing to spend the money on a high quality leather sling ($50 - $80).

The only ranges around I know of that go that distance are Lacrosse Rifle Club (Lacrosse, WI) and Gopher Rifle & Revolver (Harris, MN). Not sure if either is open to the public at all though.

Got a web sling and put the first few rounds through it yesterday.

I just set up at 200 yards right away. Seemed to be already zeroed! I didn't change a thing.

Everything seems good so far!
