Glock 34 Competition Upgrades/Gear

Postby AX7400 on Sun Aug 11, 2013 12:50 pm

I recently purchased a Glock 34 and I am looking to make some upgrades. First off the stock sights have to go! I am not a fan of stock Glock sights at all and I feel like that is part of the reason I haven't really enjoyed shooting Glocks in the past. I have read a couple of other posts on here about the 34 and suggested upgrades however I haven't seen any that address the different type of matches...I would like the gun to still qualify as "stock" for IDPA, USPSA and GSSF. That being said I think an upgraded trigger is out of the question since I believe that would disqualify the gun from GSSF.

I am leaning toward a Fiber Optic front sight and black rear...any good suggestions? I also will need to purchase a holster as well as mag pouches so any suggestions for these items would also be greatly appreciated. Also anyone who has any other pointers for me on the matches in general would be great. Any other advise would be greatly appreciated as I am new to this whole competitive shooting scene however I was watching some videos online the other night and it looks like a blast!

BladeTech mag pouches & holster from Ron on the forum. His web page is unholstered.com. Good guy, good gear.

I bought a CR Speed belt but if I had to do it again I'd get a Double Alpha belt. They seem a little more rigid. Either way, you'll want a 2-piece belt.

I like Warren Tactical Sevigny Competition sights (black rear & fiber front). I hear good things about the Dawson sights, too.

I put a glocktriggers.com Vogel trigger in. It is USPSA legal and GTG for IDPA too, I think. If it takes you longer than 5 minutes to swap it out for the stock trigger for the one local GSSF match, you're doing it wrong. I like the Vogel trigger but I only have about 800 rounds through it. I'm not convinced the shorter reset & spring kit was worth $150 (now the glocktriggers.com Edge trigger is a different story but that isn't Production legal). I simply polished and dry fired all my other Glocks.

Not on your list but get a pair of electronic muffs. That way you can still BS while waiting to shoot.

As for competition, this is my first year shooting USPSA. It will be a long time before the equipment is what is holding me back. Go try it and shoot the piss out if your G34. You'll have a ton of fun.

If you aren't looking to spend a ton on sights, push the rear sight in backwards (making it black) then toss on a Hi Viz fiber optic green or red front sight. This option costs you around $25-30 depending on where you find the front sight. Wayyy cheaper than other options and works pretty well. I have this setup on my 17.
If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster.

The ghost connector requires some fitting, but feels as good as the high dollar triggers
Grip tape or stippling is personal preference, check the rules of the game you are playing first, to much can put you in open class
Agree with Ron on his suggestions

I didn't realize how easy it was to swap out the trigger.....I have actually heard alot of good comments surrounding the Vogal Trigger, also seems like I have been seeing alot of posts pertaining to the Warren Tactical Sevigny Competition sights. Seems like these might be the way to go! I am probably going to start with sights and grip tape and go from there.

I do have one more follow up question....should I be good with 3 mags (i plan on purchasing at least two more eventually) just trying to prioritize where to begin with my soon to be expensive hobby....double mag pouch or should I just go all out and get a quad?

I have also read various posts that grip tape doesn't stick the best to the gen 4's due to the texture on the stock grip....has anyone else experienced this? If so have you found any type that works better? The grip tape isn't expensive so I am probably going to give some a shot either way but thought someone else might have already troubleshot this issue.

A piece of inner tube from a bike works great for the grip on a Glock and is cheap to boot. Head to your local bike store and check out the dumpster, you will have a supply for a lifetime.

Save your money for ammunition. Do not mess with the gun. If you really can not stand the sights get a sharpie and black out the white. 3 magazines should be plenty for your rookie year until you find out what you like and don't like. You cannot "upgrade" a Glock 34 (except by trading it for a 20 or 21  ). All you will do is spend money to tinker with and/or change it with little or no benefit.

Why wouldn't you be able to use a glocktriggers.com kit in GSSF? It's all stock GLOCK parts, just some polishing and what not done to them.

I guess I don't know for sure as I am new to this. When I was reading the rules for the stock class for GSSF it said that it had to be commercially available from Glock INC. So I guess it is possible that if the Vogal is all Glock parts I might be good to go, but if there are any parts that are not available from GLOCK it is grounds for disqualification. I am not 100% sold on swapping out the trigger as I just got the gun and only put 200 rounds downrange. I will know more after I get a better feel on my next couple of range trips.

I still think I might pony up the cash for some different sights....its not just the white on the sights its the general sight picture from them, it is my least favorite between the many handguns I have shot. I am going to hold off on the trigger for the time being until I have a chance to get a thousand or so rounds through it and have a better overall feel for the gun I think.

Thanks again for all the feedback everyone.....keep it coming!!

They are all stock parts. I know this for a fact. Hell I have four trigger kits from glocktriggers.com

Come back over to Arnzen and you can play with my G34. I use it for everything.... GSSF, IDPA, USPSA, 3gun its my go to gun. I use a Vogel trigger from glocktriggers.com and the Sevigny sights from warren tactical. Leave everything else stock and dryfire.
