Gun Sight Paint

Postby BigDog58 on Fri Sep 06, 2013 5:21 pm

Hi all, my wife's uncle has a New Nagant Pistol Replica and with the black sights he can't see them well. I was thinking of just getting something like Testors Model paint in White and painting to upper portion of the front sight. He wants it white.

I then did some searching and located several different paints made just for sights, including phosphorescent, but I have no experience with amy of these.

Can anyone give me some advice about choosing a paint that will be highly visible (in White or possibly Green or even Red)?

How effective is the "Glow in the Dark" paint I've found?

It's a cheap gun but I want to help him see the front sight better. He's an old ex-Russian and loves the old (or replica) Russian guns.

Thanks,

I've used craft paint from Michaels and it works well. It comes in a real small bottle.
I use a toothpick and put 1 drop on the sight.
Dayglow orange & green show up real nice.

You could use the Jig Head paint from Wally too

I have one of these http://www.midwayusa.com/product/714524 ... -paint-kit. Used it to paint XD front sight green and so far it is holding up. Let me know and I can drop it off at your house for a few days.
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?

Go to the fishing section at fleet farm. There is a little mini 9 color paint set for painting fishing lures (can't remember the brand). Has colors ROYGBP and white/black. I think it was $10 for the set and he can choose what color shows up the best. I was testing them for low light and I think orange and green were the most visible.

Finger nail polish works amazing! Go white and the add 2 layers of clear glow in the dark. Enjoy.

Thanks a lot. I can also pick it up if it's easier for you? I'm in no hurry so whenever it best works for youyou. I'll pm my home amd cell numbers to you. I'm normally up and going around 9:30 am but can get it any time that works for you. I am going to hit a couple yard sales in the morning after 9:30 with my wife so if you call try my cell first.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. All of them are great. I thought of the jig/lure paint, but I have never made any up here and didn't know who stocked them in the area. I was at Gander today, and was so dumb, I didn't even think of looking there...DOH

The glow in the dark paint is worthless. Fortunately for me it came with a vial of white base coat/primer that works very well as white sight paint as long as you don't screw it up by applying the glow in the dark paint afterwards. Application is easy, use a toothpick to dab it on. Works great for making the front sight on a TCP more visible.

I've been happy with day-glo yellow-green fingernail polish; got it on sale at Walgreen's for $1.99.

Pat, how does it wear doing house work? Do you get lots of different colors for the outfits you have? Do you have to use nail polish remover to get it off? ;)

Pat, after painting your nails, do you find it distracting when you are trying to locate the front sight..

Oh, you guys are hilarious. But a nice apron does keep the paint off my 5-11 tactical pants.

Also I tried two colors, a bright orange-red and the yellow-green. I like the green better. So now I can just use the red on my nails... if I decide to.

More seriously, I don't know if it's gun cleaning solvents or just physical wear, but I do need to touch it up every once in a while. I've been meaning to try a system I read about a few years ago for a paint job that really resists wear: get your chosen color of Testor's model paint and let it sit until the pigment settles, then pour off the clear stuff, then mix the pigment with clear epoxy.

I used the Testors on my Henry and GP100. I would recommend taking the time to build the white base fully, with as many coats as it takes and then do the same with the color coat. I used the florescent yellow, which washes out a bit when it is really bright out. If or when I redo the sights I will try the green.

When you finish yours lets us know how it worked out.

I've used automotive touch up paint, and that didn't work too well. Right now I'm using cheap nail polish seems to be holding up, with Halloween coming up it should be easier to find some bizarre colors that would work well.
