Gun Permits for Blind?????????????????????

Postby John S. on Mon Sep 09, 2013 7:27 am

IN Iowa............................YES!

The question entered the crosshairs of some gun control advocates over the weekend, after a report about Iowa issuing permits to buy and carry firearms to people who are legally blind.

That's legal under the federal Gun Control Act of 1968, which limits who can get guns nationwide. People who were convicted of crimes and served time for more than a year, people addicted to controlled substances and anyone who has been committed to a mental institution are among those who aren't allowed to possess firearms.

Each state has different rules governing gun permits.

In Iowa, at least, the visually impaired can get permits to carry firearms in public, The Des Moines Register reported on Sunday.

Also in MN.. I know of an instructor who did help one blind person get one.. The use their cane for self defense.. here, they were just taught to hold the gun next to the cane and use it if someone got too close after being ordered to leave them alone.

If you can't see, how do you:

Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

A bad ass seeing eye dog with lasers on his harness would be more effective.

Remember that "legally blind" can be very different from actually blind (i.e. zero vision)... ;)

Funny, we talked about this at the dinner table last night. We ended up thinking that someone (say a young woman) who is legally blind might very well want to carry in a purse. If she were attacked, she could use her firearm through her purse, while it's pressed against her attacker. No real need for aiming, sights, vision, anything.

Granted, that might be a rather limited usage case, but I don't think it's either contrived or trivial. I certainly wouldn't want to deny the legally blind a legitimate means of self defense.

My anti-gun brother in law sent me this article in an email. This was my response:

Most defensive shootings happen when a person has such an adrenaline
dump they are functionally blind and retarded anyway. I don't think
George Zimmerman needed to see Trayvon Martin when he was getting his
face pummeled and head beat into concrete. The blind don't have less
of a right to defend themselves - they just need to be more judicious
in when they choose to pull the trigger.

Maybe you all should talk to phorvick......

Since he has first hand experience with both mn and nd and a blind student.

For the record, I never said they should or shouldn't - I believe I asked a reasonable question, or does being legally blind invalidate the basic rules of gun safety?

I don't think it invalidates gun safety rules and certainly when they are practicing I would expect they have a spotter/helper, but defensive gun use is another issue. I don't think you need to see in order to shoot someone that is on top of you trying to beat you to death or rape you.

Their rules of engagement may be different than ours, but their rights are the same.

As I said, talk to phorvick.

All things he has dealt with directly.

You can search for it here also as it was all talked about before...

Trying to find more info, so far all I see is a quote from you stating:
"I believe Phorvick got himself into a pickle not own making a couple years ago. Trying to deal with a blind student."

What if they just want to own guns as a physical investment.
