Need help.

Postby Mormprepr on Sun Sep 15, 2013 6:13 pm

I will be visiting the far north eastern section of MN very soon to help my uncle get his BOL and eventual home more suitable for living. I'm applying for a Utah gun permit, but I highly doubt I'll receive it before our trip. I have a few questions concerning the laws in your beautiful state.

1. Do I need a license/permit to carry a long gun (AR/ shotgun) on my uncles property?
2. Do I need a license/permit to carry a handgun on the aforementioned property?
3. If the above two questions are both yes' do I need a license/permit to carry a black powder pistol on said property?

I'm not overly worried about the two legged animals, but my uncles property is full of sharp toothed four legged ones and the moose who despite having flat teeth are very deadly, or so I'm told.

I just realized there was a Carry Issue section, sorry, this probably belongs there. I'm going to blame the mistake on my iPhone. I'm at work and my phone won't let me zoom on the flea leg sized font...

You're positive? I have made it 28 years with only one speeding violation, I'd hate to go on a working vacation and become a felon! :D

Bug out location. We're building a castle and I get to be the patrol space shuttle's door gunner.

I took this directly off the Department of Public Safety's website:

When is a permit to carry not required?
A permit to carry is not required of a person: (Minnesota Statute 624.714 Subd. 9)
To keep or carry about the person's place of business, dwelling house, premises or on land possessed by the person a pistol; To carry a pistol from a place of purchase to the person's dwelling house or place of business, or from the person's dwelling house or place of business to or from a place where repairing is done, to have the pistol repaired;
To carry a pistol between the person's dwelling house and place of business;
To carry a pistol in the woods or fields or upon the waters of this state for the purpose of hunting or of target shooting in a safe area;
To transport a pistol in a motor vehicle, snowmobile or boat if the pistol is unloaded, contained in a closed and fastened case, gun box, or securely tied package.

https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/bca-divisions/administrative/Pages/Permit-to-Carry-FAQ.aspx

Technically it sounds like you would be breaking the law since you don't own the land and you won't be hunting or target shooting.

I am pretty sure you can carry a gun at another person's non-public property without a permit. Just don't walk around in the woods when it is legal to hunt deer, or the 5 days before / 2 days after.

It's family land unless his uncle wants to bust him for trespass he is fine.

So maybe if I target shoot and "rent" some of his property in the form of a space to put my tent I'll be good?

Also that didn't say anything about an long gun...

Seriously you will not be breaking any law carrying a pistol or long gun on private property that you have permission to be on. The only thing here that you should keep in mind is the week before and during deer season. (Basically November). You could get in trouble with the Game Wardens.

Cool, I appreciate the info. I have no intention of taking any game unless the game tries taking me first. But hopefully I won't run into any Tommy Boy style deer. Now as far as bear, moose, or wolf goes I plan on doing my best to avoid them, but if it comes down to me or them, I'll take my chances in front of a jury as I would with the two legged vermin.
