Bad day for my first born

Postby Big and Tasty on Thu Sep 19, 2013 12:45 pm

First pistol I ever bought, broke on me today. G22 that I bought 20 years ago.

Everything seemed to function normal. Put 100 rounds of WWB 165 grain down the pipe with no hint of anything awry. Once I got home and stripped her down....I had to grab a Kleenex to dry my eyes. The receiver failed in front of the slide lock, right below the metal rail. When I removed the slide, a little chunk of severely chewed up plastic came out. Both sides of the receiver under the rail and 1 inch before the slide lock is chewed to crap. Plus the spring then subsequently chewed the finish off of the recoil spring seat in the slide. Ugh.

Anyone familiar with how Glock handles stuff such as this? I did call and intend to send to them - though I would appreciate hearing from anyone with first hand experience.

Thanks all - Mike

My guess is you call Glock and explain to one of the tech's and they will treat you very fairly. That's been my experience albeit only some magazine issues is all I had.

They were nice people. I would not hesitate to call.

Have you shot a bunch of hotter reloads through it over the years? Just curious.

No reloads, it has always seen factory loads. Glock folks were really nice on the phone, said to send her in and we will take a look. Given the age of it, I am pleased that they are even willing to take a look at it. Shipped Fedex today. It was funny when I went to Fedex in Woodbury - the manager requested I demonstrate that it was clear before final packing. So I did my safety clearance check at the counter, I don't think a couple of customers in the store were too thrilled having to see a real 'live gun'!

I will let you all know how it plays out.

To be fair, a firearm clear of a holster anywhere other than at a range is cause to give me concern too. Hope you got some punch pizza next door and I hope your glock gets repaired gratis.

Glocks don't need things like metal, springs, or even a complete, one piece frame. Those bits that came off obviously aren't needed.

So, A Glock 22 only works for 2 decades?

Today I received a call from Pete at Glock. He quizzed me at length about what sort of loads I shoot and so forth. I reiterated that this pistol has never seen anything BUT factory loads. He was a bit surprised (not sure he really believed me) and said the only time they have ever seen this type of damage is when someone is really loading them HOT. Nonetheless, he told me that they found the receiver to be "brittle" (his words, not mine), and will therefore replace the receiver, refinish the slide, and overall refurbish her before they send back my way.

All said and done - I am quite pleased. Best irony here is that even with a beat to crap receiver that ended up missing pieces, and with operating tolerances way out of spec - she still functioned fine and put holes in paper as good as can be. I couldn't tell anything was wrong until cleaning time.

What a testament to Glock. Only time I have seen frame damage on a Glock was hotter than spec reloads, and the damage did not effect function. You'll get basically a new gun, for the cost of shipping to them.

Of all the Glocks I've worked on and repaired, I have never seen one with damage that extensive. Do you have any idea of the round count through that weapon?

I had no doubt they would take care of you. I was at their factory (when I took armorer's class) years ago in GA, and they showed us several guns with "brittle" frames. All had been sent in for repair and were exchanged. At least that's what they told us. The tech that taught our class said that shooting "hot rounds" on a regular basis (he did mention +P) wasn't a suggested practice. That was over 15 yrs ago.

Enjoy your "new looking" gun :high5:

Exactly. In fact, it performed flawlessly. Groups were still just as tight as always. Some may consider the level of damage to be fatal, but she was still putting lead down the pipe.

My confidence in Glock is reaffirmed tenfold. It is just a matter of time before I pick up something new, and I know who is getting my cash!

Thanks Big Dog. I estimate about 6k rounds as I tend to shoot my 9's more. And the recoil spring has been swapped 2x over the years. Someday I will convince the wife to let me start reloading my mountains of brass and then I will shoot .40 more often.

FedEx swung by on Friday with a nice surprise. She is all good to go. And even better yet - I now have a Gen 3 frame :D

Might be swinging by OGC on Sunday to run her through the paces.
