If I were shopping for a complete AR

Postby shooter115 on Mon Sep 30, 2013 1:17 pm

This would be very interesting. http://www.coltcompetitionrifle.com/Firearms/ColtSportingRifleModelCSR1518.aspx
Grab a gun has them now at $938. One thing I see that kinda surprises me though is non-chrome lined chrome-moly steel barrel. If they would have put this out with a stainless or chrome lined barrel at that price, it would be the best buy going in AR's right now.

Competition rifles usually won't have chrome lined bores - even minor irregularities in the lining affect accuracy. Melonite would be a different story. IIRC, Huldra guarantees 1 MOA accuracy for their ARs

I have read that chrome lining knocks 1/2 to a full moa off your accuracy. Not that I'd notice.

Actually in the last few years there are a few companies that have really refined the chrome lining process and are making more accurate barrels than what used to be available. Criterion, Lothar Walther and Sabre quickly come to mind.

No forward assist either? Looks like a budget rifle similar to the Colt 9600 that just came out. I think PSA would be your best bet for a great value on a quality rifle. Some companies are using melonite to line barrels now and that doesn't seem to effect accuracy. Seems to be superior to chrome lining also.

Lack of forward assist would not be a deal breaker IMO. If it won't chamber under the inertia of the BCG it needs a chamber cleaning; using the FA could really get a round jammed up. I can't recall ever using the FA even when really dirty. I suppose if it was a defensive/combat gun then you may want that option, but this looks to be more of a lightened varmit hunting/target gun.

And opt for an AR with the melonite coating. Makes cleaning a breeze.

I'm with Tronster on the FA, IMHO they are pretty worthless feature. About the only time I've ever used it is when I've had to ride the bolt forward out of necessity (trying to be quiet yote hunting). I've never used it in a match. If it jams, clear it.....don't pound it in. But then I don't think I've ever had a rile malfunction at a match.......and yes I am going to knock on every piece of wood within 5' after I hit submit ;)

I'm not saying it's the best thing out there, but for the under $1K mark, it has a lot of nice features. I actually never thought I'd see a Colt that I would consider a bargain.

The Colt Comp rifles I have seen are nice rifles. FYI though they are not "real colts" they are made by a shop out of TX with licensing to use the Colt name. They make all the Colt Comp brand guns, this matters to some who want the real deal colts etc. I haven't dug into the hard specs yet to see what materials the bolt and carrier are, MPI etc. The ones we have sold though, the customers have been happy.

I would be very skeptical of a huldra shooting 1 MOA... I've never seen a piston gun get close.

I've never had the chance to shoot a Huldra off the bench to see what the actual accuracy in MOA looks like, but I did the chance to leisurely shoot Dave's Huldra Xpre at a 3-gun match last year. They are solid, nice shooting rifles and I don't have any doubts it would shoot MOA with decent ammo.

Hmm... Well I've never seen, nor have i heard (even online) of anyone getting 1 MOA, much less sub MOA accuracy. I'm sure they run great, but those colts are going to achieve a lot better accuracy.

Hmm, so you have one then and can prove this statement?

I believe they guarantee it.

I'm going to put mine to the test next time I'm at the range. Although I don't think I have good enough ammo to get anywhere near 1 MOA.
