Any suggestions on 2 way Radio's for hunting MN and OR

Hello Hunters,

Looking for experience based opinions here. I have done my own research and have a specific model in mind to purchase. However I wanted to come here to MNGUNTALK.COM and see if any hunters here had some suggestions.

I am looking for a 2 way radio, I don't need GPS. I will use it for MN rifle deer and Elk Oregon annually, so they will be used in rough, covered terrain. Any suggestions on make and model to get?

Also, we use them to radio back to camp that we got one or if some of the elders in our tribe are cold and need to come in. We have been using some ancient Motorola's for years, last few years we used cell phones. Figured now was the time to purchase a decent radio.

We are not breaking the law with how we use them as we are not herding the animals or communicating on the hunt. Just for safety mostly. Hunting with guys pushing 90, no law is going to stop us from making sure they remain safe and healthy. Suggestions please.

Driztan - I would stay away from the "cheap" FRS radio's and go with a 2-way that is programmed on a Business Freq. There are freqs that do not need any licensing and known as itinerant (sic) business freqs.. They operating on a higher output wattage - this giving more range.

I believe he is suggesting the multi user radio service or MURS as it is referred to. It's the only part 95 frequency that doeant require a license other than FRS or CB.

All of which are limited to either 2 watts or in cb, 5 watts. No repeaters are allowed either.

All of these are also considered line of sight radios as well so if you have hills, trees, buildings etc, reception or transmitting will pretty well be even more limited.


So what you own already will be no better or worse than anything else on the market currently.

Past that, take a 30 question test to get your technician license for ham radio and that will get you much better vhf or even uhf radios.

Not legally.

They would be operating out of band for what they are certified for. Technically, they both require at least a technician class ham license.
