Has anyone shot both of them and what do you think?

I have a saiga 12 that I modified and I love it! Can't comment on the other.

Molot VEPR 12 or Saiga 12

Postby RJWesleyIII on Tue Nov 26, 2013 9:37 pm

Thanks brad. If you get the vepr, let us know how she runs. I still want to change out a few things on mine like a chaos quad rail and a different trigger guard to accept AR15 grips...someday I guess

Having both, I prefer my saiga.

I like the VEPR bolt, and LRBHO. I dislike the magwell, short handguard, factory cheek rest, gas system still needs work to shoot low brass etc.

All in all I would just take the VEPR bolt, and LRBHO system and put it in a tuned up saiga.

Slightly off topic so please forgive, but do you need a P2P to buy an unconverted Saiga 12? Thinking of the one I sold long ago and might want to jump back into one. Thanks!

Its a shotgun, so no formal special permit needed, at least not yet.

I will say that I haven't shot a VEPR, but the Saigas I have the one that is dead reliable it was heavily customized for 3 gun; the stock guns were all rather (very) picky about ammo. The custom one still needs a bit more gas pressure than a benelli for example. Cheap wally world promo loads are not that reliable.

There are more folks doing customizing work on the Saigas than the Molot, and Surefire makes an after market mag for the Saiga that works, they are better than the factory mags.

In my experience, the drums are pretty much worthless. They are all picky, require a lot of TLC and are heavy and get in the way of proper hand placement on the forearm. I suppose if all you want is crowd control, it would be OK.

In my experience, they work for getting a lot of rounds down range in a short period of time. The factory chokes are a joke, the style of magazine makes it rather difficult to effectively shoot birds with because (at least for me) the magazine is always bumping in to something, and the biggie, the dang thing is heavy. Fully loaded, it weighs more than a Mag 10. I know some guys who like to hunt with them in combat slings with over 10 rounds stuffed in it, which seems kind of a waste of time and venison, but its their life. They are good for gun games, and home defense, and maybe cleaning pigeons out of the barn, but in any case, you either need to spend a bunch of $$$ getting it reliable, or need to be a pretty good home gunsmith and do it yourself. Seems like the guys who don't pay the $$$ have the guns puke at any 3 gun I see them at.

I've used my Saiga for geese

(Special spring hunt with no mag cap limit, of course)

Everyone knows VEPR was superior before they were taken over by the state. Now they're just one in the same comrade.

Squib needs belt fed to get my attention.

I don't want to start a war but other than gaming what would you ever want one of these for?

As a upland hunting gun they are less than functional, for waterfowl you can only use it when/where capactity limits are not in place.

For home protection it is like having a tank parked in the garage, may make you fell warm and fuzzy but if you have to use it you may find it is a little tough to weild.

Now I do get the gaming part so no flames guy.

The ear to ear grin after a twenty round drum dump at the range was all the reason I ever needed. Dang I miss that gun.
