I'm a reloading noob.
I'm trying to be a responsible reloading noob.
I don't know what I don't know, but know enough to RTFM, use google, and ask those that do when I don't understand.
A merchant that doesn't want new (noob) customers is destined to dinosaurdome, eventually.
An employee that doesn't own a stake in success won't have the business's best interest in mind.
While the owner is away, the unsupervised employee will behave as they will, employees do that. Good ones are rare.
I'm not a fan of either John, but big John just recently helped me understand a galling problem with a .45 expander die.
I really appreciate that. Because of his help, I spent $200 on primers, cartridges, primer press and some bullets, etc.
I could have spent less online.
I'd like to see the owner succeed despite his attitude with noobs. He's been curt with me, but honest. I respect his position.
I'll continue to shop there, and try to be responsible as a noob, and do due diligence. I want GS to be there for me.
I will continue to ask questions because I wish to be safe and wish to not waste money buying junk or the wrong stuff.
Better for me to spend more once at Gunstop, than waste money on the wrong stuff just to have to get the right stuff.
I respect what others know and hope to learn to swim with them, not become a lamprey holding them back.
Those of you who take your business elsewhere at this time with the owner away risk losing his success and continued presence.
It may not be what you're used to or want, but it's better than the alternative of it being gone for good.
Please consider tolerance during this time, and continue your patronage.

*** my only interest is having a valued resource available to me near where I live. I barely know either John, have no stake in the business beyond Gunstop being there for me, for all of us.

I called GS today to find out if they are open tomorrow. Got hung up on. Well, I'm going tomorrow. I know what I want and hope to minimize interaction except to get powder. I'm honestly not looking forward to going, and I never thought I'd say that about GS. Gouger Mt, yes, but not GS. I wonder how business is doing.

John was in the shop on Wednesday when I was there...or was it Saturday? either way he was there for a while and looked good and sounded to be in good spirits. Sounded as though he was just there to take care of business, not to return for good yet.

Went in a couple of days ago and was helped by big John. He was quick (for GS ;-) ) and curtius. Kudos!

Good to hear about owner John, glad he is doing better.
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?

Kinda funny sometimes when you go in with well informed questions and you don't second guess guys who have basically devoted a lifetime to the study of reloading... how it can garner respectful and helpful service.

Now now nay sayers... I'm not singling any on out. But I too have experienced the quoted situation several times. But then I don't go there expecting a conjugal or to meet a best friend or whatever serves as "adequate treatment."

Went there today, was the only customer. No offer to help. I finally found the die I wanted, asked the "not John" fellow for powder, got it. Tried to wish big John a Merry Christmas and he told me he was too busy to talk to customers.

Well, have a Merry Christmas anyway.

There are other people who know reloading so I'll direct my questions elsewhere.

no more gunstop until john is back

Postby Jreinan01 on Wed Dec 25, 2013 12:04 am

Tall thin John has always been nice to me, no issues... I don't ever talk to Big John, no interest after watching him be a complete jerk to people.

The gun world is completely filled with these cliquey a#*hole places and I just don't get it, I guess they only care about long standing customers and have enough money that they don't need anymore. I truly think the reason is that they are just trying to make enough money to have the good old boys club and don't have ANY interest in running an actual retail establishment. They merely tolerate outsiders....

Unbelievable.

Perhaps we should pool our resources and buy this guy a personality as a Christmas present.

Maybe they'll end up just filling Internet orders, but without a "real-time" inventory system it won't be possible to know what is actually in stock from their current website. And good luck calling to inquire. One would think, as the premier reloading shop in the metro, that they'd want to increase or maintain business but it doesn't seem that way. At this point I'll go there when convenient, if I need enough specific items to make the trip worthwhile. Most of the stuff I used to get there I have sourced elsewhere.

And yes the comment »The gun world is completely filled with these cliquey a#*hole places and I just don't get it...» is valid. I spent a lot of money at J&S and still get ignored there. I have asked them to get me guns and give them my #. I never hear but go back and it's there unsold. Maybe they don't need the money, I don't know.

Maybe the new Cabela's in Woodbury will be a good place to go. We'll see.

as grumpy as Ron is I still go down the road to Hopkins and Ammocraft 'cause it's still MUCH better.

I stopped by their place last summer for the first time. While waiting for my friend, I just started talking to the big guy by the door. I kind of know my stuff on reloading, but the guy started pulling the smart ass thing on me. Being a smart ass myself but also knowing the retail thing about not smart assing a customer who you don't know, I walked away from the jerk and walked out of there vowing not to waste my time at this shop and that jackass again.

After reading this thread I guess that I was on the mark about this guy.

I'll stick with Brian and Gary at the Wolf's Den
