How to keep carbines upright and not bumping in the safe

Postby gdubya on Sat Jan 04, 2014 4:37 pm

I am a newb to having a safe. I am having trouble keeping my long guns from bumping around in my safe. I have plenty of room (for now) but they are not long enough to reach the fixed rack meant to hold the barrels. Works fine for my hunting rifle, and I sacrificed a shelf and put that carpeted piece under the 10/22 and it will barely reach, but neither my camp 9 or my ar will reach and they tend to tip and bump other stuff or lean on sights or scopes which I don't want. I am looking for some kind of hanger or attachment but can't seem to find anything that looks like what I want and have no idea what to search for or what it would be called. I guess I could stick some 2x4s together and get something to try to match the carpet to cover them and stand the carbines on that to make them taller but it seems like there should be something else that would work better.

simple but ugly would be to extend the barrel by putting a length of wooden dowel in the barrel so it reaches the holder

ETA make sure prior to use the barrel is checked for any pieces that may have broken off

or put a chunk of pvc pipe over the barrel to do the same thing - less chance of obstruction a barrel inadvertently. :)

The ones that don't reach get laid against ones that do reach in mine, it's a pain in the ass. Gonna have to try the pvc trick!

Buy some long, cheap tube socks from Walmart and pull them over the muzzle ends as far down as they'll go. Then let them bump.

Or you can be less of a cheap bastard with your $500 + dollar equipment and spend $8+ dollars on something better.

Or simply use those silicone impregnated gun socks to cover the entire rifle. I think they can be found at Wal-mart too.
They might help prevent a ding or two.

Sure, spend as much as you want. Your version is definitely more tactical!

Foam or plastic rack with magnet mounting allows it to mount on the back of a steel safe and keep the rifles upright.

I use their pistol hangers, works slick. I bet the rifle hangers are nice too. That's the route I would go.

Worth repeating.

The Lockdown one works pretty good IF you have a decent safe.

If you want to go the cheap route, cut your own out of foam and just glue them to the sides. I've done this too.

That's what I did. It looks bad but works.

Thanks for all the ideas, guys. Probably go for the storemoreguns rod system and screw some velcro strips on to the bottom of the fixed rack to keep in place. That seems like a very elegant solution for $20.
