Dan wesson opinion

Postby dupa on Thu Jan 09, 2014 5:13 pm

have a chance at a dan Wesson 357 with one barrel (4).. blued. decent over condition. the guy is asking 500$ for it.

last revolver I had was a Taurus. I like the idea of being able to switch out the barrels, looks like they can be found online.

any opinions on these dan wessons?

Taurus revolvers and Dan Wesson revolvers are not in the same class. Dan Wesson revolvers are much better. The .357 magnum is a nice caliber because you can shoot .38 specials as well. I would not hesitate to buy it.

Dan Wesson makes some beautiful revolvers. They have historically been quite well built. I think there were periods in the company history where they were less so (the brand has been owned by various companies over time), but you'd have to do some deeper research to find out details. They also make some beautiful 1911s...

Just be sure it's not a fixed barrel which were less expensive and not built as well. My DW still has the best trigger of all my revolvers and is very accurate. Be sure to check the timing and lockup. Haven't checked prices lately, but $500 seems on the high side. I picked my minty stainless version with two barrels for less than that. Even at that price I might look at an older Smith 686 or even an old 28 and use savings for ammo.

I had the same question many years back and I thought I'd share the wisdom I gained from that posting in 2009.....I did not end up with the revolver

thanks for the link. I read through it, very good advice.. suppose I could have saved you all the trouble by doing a quick search. there are extra barrels and the tools to change em out there.

i'm going to wander in tomorrow and see what his "best price" is, he's usually open to offers. hard to find a good deal these days, heck most the used guns I see people asking for nearly full blown retail.

I have 2 of them . A 4" and a 8" with a red dot on it for deer hunting. Love them both. I did switch out the wood grips for a set of hogues.

I decided to buy... but his shop is closed until tomorrow. so in the mean time I ended up buying a colt police positive, and a ton of reloading stuff (still giddy about all the reloading stuff)... but I'm going to go back for the Wesson after work tomorrow. and that should about hold me over for a while.

so after much messing around I ended up buying the gun , got him down to 400$ from 475.. we were working a deal to trade my colt police positive for it, but I got upside down on the deal with his math. the Wesson is missing a cylinder stop, but I found em online for 17$. hoping to get out with it soon.
