Retired FL cop shoots man for texting at movie

Hope this is not a repost, another story that will no doubt be exploited as propaganda against PTC holders.

Thought I had about a guy texting during a movie we went to a couple weeks ago but I was pretty sure I couldn't hit his phone in the dark.

Nah. They'll treat the shooter as a Cop, which distinction is a very real phenomenon in news media.

In news, Cops are like different lifeforms with special abilities to safely use firearms that humans don't possess, and once in a while one of them **** up; it sucks, but oh well. OTOH, non-cop permit holders are merely Permit Holders. In news, if a Permit Holder does something like this, it demonstrates that people generally cannot be trusted with firearms, because they are incompetent and dangerous, because they are not Cops.
Tony Martin. It could happen to us.

I just read this account of what happened. If true, this guy is heading for hard time in the state pen.
I'm sure there might be some other facts to come out, but it sounds like there were several witnesses so it should come to light what happened and it does not sound like he used good judgement.

Yeah, generally survey says you can't shoot people just for being a-holes....even if they throw popcorn at you.

I'd be curious to hear more about what words were exchanged between the two...

Yeah, right. We should just have the right to kill rude people that piss us off.

Just think what a wonderful world it would eventually be after all the rude people were finally killed off. Unless someday YOU ran across somebody that thought you were being rude.

I think the article was enhanced since it was first posted, but what I read now seems to make it sound like a reasonably legitimate self-defense situation. Mr. Obnoxious won't stop texting when asked, gets verbally abusive when the older guy tells management, starts arguing and becomes physical with him. Take the 'cop' part out of the equation and then look at it the way that gets hypothetically talked about around here a lot... Elderly person accosted by younger bully that eventually uses a gun in self-defense. Doesn't sound like the shooter started the physical part of the confrontation. He probably had a legitimate concern for safety.

Who knows? All we know is what is in the article, which is always subject to inaccuracy and bias by the media.

I agree we need the full story. The media tends to write the initial reports to demonize the shooter if there is any possibility t do so. With that being said, the way this article is written, it would seem like the shooter acted improperly. If later details emerge that the texter was the aggressor, that he was punching the shooter, and that the wife was trying to pull the texter off of the shooter to no avail, it might change things.

As it stands, with this story and the facts as given, the shooter will have already been convicted in the court of public opinion.

Yeah, that's murder. I don't think even a paintball would be justified just for getting popcorn thrown at you.
