Process to apply for the Flordia C&C reciprocity

Postby driztan on Tue Feb 04, 2014 1:05 pm

It has been a couple years since I took my C&C test. Durning this test my instructor mentioned it was a good idea to apply for the Flordia permit which would include almost all the other states Minnesota doesn't have reciprocity with.

My question, I don't remember the process to apply for reciprocity with Flordia. If someone could point me in the right direction I could take it from there.

Thank you!

EDIT: Misread your original question so I'll withdraw this portion: "but you missed the window of opportunity and would first need to take another class."

You don't apply for reciprocity, you apply for a non-resident Florida permit. At that point you could fill out the packet with fingerprinting, etc and send it in along with your money (complete instructions are in the free packet).

For the most current information that is easily understood regarding which states you'll gain, I like handgunlaw.us

I always have the packets on hand for Florida and Arizona, not sure where you're from but I'd be happy to give you one so you can see first hand.

I don't believe it does. According to their website, a MN DNR Firearm Safety certificate qualifies as acceptable training documentation.

Not that I've seen, and I just noticed I misread the first sentence, I thought he was going to get his MN and FL permit at the same time, was wondering why he waited so long. :oops:

No it does not.
A person can use the certificate issued in their last permit to carry class if that training is accepted by the state of Florida. If a person is past military they can also use their DD214 as approved training.

From the Florida web site and bold underscore by me.
Acceptable Training Documentation

Florida law requires you to submit proof of competency with a firearm in order to qualify for a concealed weapon license. A copy of a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION or similar document from any of the following courses or classes is acceptable:
•any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a similar agency in another state;
•any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
•any firearm safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;
•any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
•any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified instructor or by an instructor certified by the National Rifle Association.

The copy of the training certificate/document must be clear and legible. The certificate/document must include your name, your instructor's name, your instructor's qualifications/credentials (National Rifle Association instructor, law enforcement firearms instructor, Class "K" Firearm Instructor licensed by the State of Florida, etc.), and your instructor's license/certification number.

Other acceptable forms of training documentation include the following:
•documentary evidence of experience with a firearm obtained through participation in organized shooting competition;
•active-duty military personnel may submit copies of any of the following documents that confirm your experience with a firearm gained during your service: military orders including call to active-duty letter; a statement of military service signed by, or at the direction of, the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters which identifies you and provides your date of entry on your current active-duty period;
•former military personnel can submit a DD Form 214 reflecting honorable discharge from military service.

DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL TRAINING DOCUMENTS OR OTHER RELATED MATERIALS TO THE DIVISION.

FL will send you the packet if your not close enough to someone to get one. BTW they are NOT speedy at processing or contacting you if you missed something in what you send them.

Any training by an NRA-certified instructor is accepted. I did my FL renewal (well, really another initial application since I foolishly let mine lapse) last year. They were dissatisfied with the quality of the fingerprints the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office took and made me send them a new set. The FL permit is good for seven years now, so I'll have to live with that terrible picture for that long. They also stopped putting the home address on the permit card.

I read what it says, but a past instructor was pushing this in his class for people to use their Minnesota DNR and I heard they were rejected. So if going that route I would call and double check with Florida.

Wait a minute. What do you mean by the "Hennepin county's fingerprints"? Are you telling me you were printed for your PTC??????????

Anyone else, please chime in. I just recently moved to Minneapolis from NYC. I had my original permit from ny (which took a year to get approved, and that was 20 years ago), and I was finger printed then and also interviewed multiple times. When I applied for my MN PTC, I was not finger printed. I was also approved by Hennepin county in 6 days (got my permit in hand on the 7th day). The whole process seemed very strange to me. Can someone please elaborate?

Edit: after rereading the post, maybe Florida requires the prints and Hennepin county was required to take and send them to Florida for you??

FL requires prints. You can get them done at the Hennepin county sheriff office if you live in HC.

Re FL fingerprinting. I can't recall the specifics , but they are strict in their requirements, which may not be the same as what's practiced locally. Read / follow their instructions.

Have your fingerprints done at a location which uses "live scan" type technology. They will be classifiable or you can't print the card.
