Hearing protection for indoor range use

Short of shelling out 700.00 for two pairs of pro ears golds what would you folks recommend. I really want to be able to carry out a conversation with the wife at the range and still protect what little hearing I have left. Too many van halen concerts and working at an airport for 30 years my favorite response to my wife is "what did you say"

I really am looking a for suggestions for indoor use as I do not mind wearing plugs outdoors in the summer. Comfort and quality I do not mind paying for in just don't want to spend 350.00 bucks.

I'd recommend the Howard Leight Impact Pro. They have an NRR of 30 compared to the more commonly recommended Impact Sport with an NRR of 22.

What you can't see in the pix is how solidly they are built. May be made in China (don't know) but all around are solid. From the locking of the battery cover to the cushioning of the vinyl head piece to the wire arms the the earpieces slide on for adjustment it has the feel of a product costing 2-3x more.

I paid $45 w/ free shipping if I paid $95 I would have been satisfied.

I have the HL sport, and while I love them they seem to block less sound than other muffs. When indoor now I try to remember to add a layer of foam in ear protection under the HL. But for outdoor use the HL seems fine to most common calibers.

in all honesty, stop shooting in an indoor range or else start using double hearing protection. Yeah, I am not even 50 yet and have hearing aids. as a result, I tend to make it a point NOT to use indoor ranges or else double up on the hearing protection.

I have used walker game ears in the past with custom silicon earplugs with them. My experience with electronic protection is that while it's nice for the immediate area around you, it tends to not always provide protection from the distant shots that are still close enough.

And with a hearing loss bad enough to already require hearing aids and how it's so cumulative in damage, it's NOT worth the risk. So IF I do go indoors, it's plugs and passive ear muffs on top of them. But it's still best to just not even use an indoor range.

With appropriate hearing protection, there's nothing wrong with shooting indoors. I do agree that plugs under muffs is prudent and I routinely do that when shooting my SBR with compensator.

wow I need to try these. I have the Sports and they aren't enough 7.62x54r out of a 20" barrel, or being next to an AR with a brake

I always wear two layers of protection if I go to an indoor range. I also googled some reviews and found some good advice that also explains the difference between different cup styles and why some are better or worse.

Sometimes raising your voice is better than losing your hearing

Keep in mind that I cannot vouch for the reviews, I can only say that they paint a picture that could help you decide which protection is best for you.

My hearing is already damaged from a misspent youth, but hearing aids aren't required and I'm older than you are. I have a pretty good handle on the physiology of hearing and hearing protection these days, thanks.
