Ar flash hider/muzzle brake shims.

Hey guys. Just upgraded a bunch of parts on my AR and got a yhm phantom break. But didn't come with any shims to time it right. Does any one know who in town may possibly carry these in stock? Looking for around the cities. Thanks.

Forget the shims, get a "crush washer", that'll save time and frustration. The crush washer allows the installer to simply screw the muzzle brake on to the desired position and quit.

Agree. Crush washer (they're steel). I quite wasting my time with shims for muzzle devices years ago.

Shims are really only necessary for muzzle devices that will be used to mount suppressors, or MDs that by design have to be installed with shims.
Otherwise, shims are a PITA and a crush washer makes your life easier. I did a YouTube video of how to time a muzzle device using shims, and you can see how much wasted effort it is.

Will the crush washer give that much? Hand tight the bottom of the brake is about the 11 o'clock position. It did come with one crush washer.

Yup, there's lots of "give", surely enough to give a full turn and possibly two turns after the device contacts the crush washer.

Prescribed way to use a crush washer according to Allan at BattleComp is tighten the muzzle device 90 degrees at a time, back off a little each time until your last turn to get it timed is 90 degrees. Crushing the washer with 90 degrees of rotation will give you the proper amount of torque on the device. Make sure you use a good wrench that won't damage the device, like a distributer or similarly narrow wrench. I use a Hammerhead tool with the upper secured in a Geissele Reaction Rod. Next best method is a barrel block. You can secure the barrel well just by cutting a couple of V-notches in a piece of 2x4 and wrapping the barrel with some wet leather.

The crush washer is oriented so that the narrow end of it is toward the stock.

Speaking of crush washers once you "crush" it is that it or can it be "crushed" again? The reason I ask is I have one and changed the flash hider but there was no way I was going to get that extra half turn to line it up.
I ended up sanding it down so my new hider would line up.

Crush washers are a disposable part, once they are crushed discard and use a new one. When we remove muzzle devices we replace the crush washer with a new one.
