Bought the press for high volume, mid range blasting rounds. Hunting round development and near max round work up will be done on my single stage with judicious use of my powder scale.Erud wrote:
Like I mentioned earlier, aside from high volume blasting ammo, EVERYTHING else gets done on a slightly-modified 550.
noylj wrote:Makes no sense to me. Powder measures are more than consistent enough for almost all loading needs. If one inspects each case for charge volume/height, I would say you can enjoy your manual-indexing, but it isn't for me and I don't see any advantage--particularly NOT for a 4 station press, where I can't use an RCBS Lock-Out die and a separate seat and crimp.
Also, my ChargeMaster keeps up with my loading on a 1050 just fine when I am working up loads and constantly adjusting a powder measure makes no sense.
My minimum progressive press is a 5-station press that puts the charged case directly under my nose for bullet seating--like the L-N-L and NOT the other Dillons. With the 1050s, I have enough die stations to set-up all I want and still inspect a case (just not as conveniently as a L-N-L).
Each have their preferences.

I was just curious what the potential for using the machine as a single stage or similar to a 550 would be should the need or wild hair arise. I hear what you are saying in regards to double charging as such visually verifying powder charge prior to bullet seating is standard procedure.

Using as single stage is quite easy - just put one die in at a time! Or use it as two, or three, or four stage with the same principle
