PEET safekeeping dryer

Postby yukonjasper on Thu Apr 17, 2014 12:55 pm

I have one of these on its way. I want to get it installed when it arrives but don't know how to access and punch a hole in my gun safe to get an electrical cord in there. I seem to remember that my safe has a punch out on the upper corner on the back.

Do you just use a drill?

Should I fill in around the electrical cord with something after I punch it so it will retain some of its fire rating?

Would it be worth it to install a remote sensor hydrometer?

Wondering what others have done.

Most safes do have a cord access somewhere already. Find yours and use that. As far as filling the excess gap around the cord, I doubt there will be much. I just stuck a piece of duct tape on the outside over the cord and the hole to block airflow. I'm not terribly worried that a hole that small would impact the fire rating much. I might be wrong but I do think I have bigger things to worry about.

As for monitoring humidity levels, I keep cheap temp and humidity sensors in the safes and then one sitting on top a safe also. That way I can compare ambient room conditions to what is happening in each safe. The monitors are about $5 at target.

As an added measure of rust protection, I keep a can of rechargeable silica gel in each safe also. Then the first weekend of each month, they get recharged in the oven, need it or not. This not only gives me another layer of humidity protection, it also gives me an excuse to open the safes at least once a month as well.

Good luck!

if you are worried about compromising the fire rating, you could seal the hole around the cord with 3M Fire Block sealant.

Get yourself three lead shot bags from the range, fill with rice and place in safe. Every three to four months place in microwave for about two minutes. My safe is in a non-climate controlled area and have no rust issues what so ever. Cheap and effective.

FWIW I read somewhere on the interwebs that blue crystal kitty litter was cheap bulk desiccant gel...
