Didn't mean to cause a commotion among MNGuntalk members. I was looking for any personal insights or experiences with the Detonics. Thanks for the feedback. GJ

You didn't. One loose cannon just happens to be having a bad day.

That wasn't your fault - it was my totally my fault. The original Detonics 451 was one of the first attempts to magnumize the 45 ACP, and it was a wrist breaker. Add to that proprietary brass, and it was destined to fail from the beginning. I had totally forgotten that they then went to 9mm's, and Squib Joe summed it up pretty good. It was one of the first attempts to miniaturize a 9mm platform.

Seismic Sam wrote:And you are asking us instead of using Google for what reason?? Seriously, WTF is your personal inititative and responsibility?? In this particular case, this is a real rarity, and the brass is proprietary, and in a gun that size it's a wrist breaker. It's a half brother of the 460 Rowland and the parent of the 45 Super, which is much more mainstream. Plus the fact that it would take 1/10th the time to just Google it rather than upload picture you took and then write the post.

Sorry to be a Grinch, but I've had a bad week, and even if I hadn't, your question is so far off the beaten track that probably about 3 of us remember this nasty little oddity. But noooo......, you gotta come in here and ask us something that you could learn all about by typing just 11 characters into Google.

A long time ago shortly after the great Schism that spawned this board, ,Joel Rosenburg referred to it as "The Daycare Canter", which it wasn't, but you seem to think that we're your nannies anyway. Dunno about the rest of you, but I'm insulted by somebody expecting me to type 11 characters into Google because they're too lazy to do it themselves....

Isn't that what this place is for? People to be able to communicate with other people to learn? Google definitions are all fine and great, but personal experiences are far better to learn from. No need to be such a douche, just because you know an answer that others don't, doesn't mean they are stupid questions or a waste of time. Get over yourself.

All right, all right... I know sometimes SS can be a little rough around the edges, but he has admitted... What three times now... That he was having a bad day and apologized.

I was shocked, and mad to see that first response from Sam too, but am over it now. We've all had bad days and said things we regretted.

On with the discussion...

EDIT: By the way, I have no input on this unusual find, but I like pics, so thanks for posting them OP.

What I probably should have done to begin with:

http://www.z3bigdaddy.com/site8/page44.html

I remember the original hoopla, but not a lot of the details.

Once the 451 started sucking wind, Detonics started casting around for something else to fill the gap. Thus the 9mm.

In a lot of ways, the whole Detonics thing is a replay of the original Automag fiasco, where the original Automag was a great idea but broke a lot, and then AMT started spinning off weird variants, and finally wound up with the AMT Hardballer, which was a stainless 45, and not bad, and the AMT backup, in a variety of calibers, and like the Detonics a very small stainless auto for the time.

Detonics was one of the original marketeers of the pocket pistol. The Pocket Nine and the Combat Master in an 1911 officer size compact .45. They also worked on few other lines of 1911s for bullseye/target shooting (Score Master) and fullsize carry. The company has been bought and sold and moved all around the US in the past 30 years. They just recently sprung up again in IL as Detonics Defense LLC. http://www.detonicsdefense.com They have a new generation of the original Combat Master and a newer commander designed carry option.
