Remington 1100 cycling issue.

Hey all,

My buddy has an older 1100 that is in pretty good shape but just won't cycle. Everything looks good internally, and we replaced the gas seals and rings. we tried a few different low brass target loads and a few black cloud loads. It won't even eject the empty brass on any of them. Anybody got suggestions on how to fix it?

A good cleaning of bolt, action, and possible replacement of extractor.
Usually the oil used in old guns is all varnish and restricts movement of components such as extractor.
Clean it good, then try it again.

Your gas rings should look like this when assembled. Make sure gas ports in barrel are clean.

Plus two on gas ports. Use a tiny drill bit by hand to clean out the fouling. The 2 3/4 inch barrel has 2 ports next to each other and the 3" barrel only has one. At least that's the way it is on my 1970s vintage 1100.

I believe we cleaned it very well, but I think we are going to take it down as far as we can to clean every nook and cranny. It is a 70's possibly before that even and a 3" chamber with the one gas port. I will try the drill bit idea as well, but I ran some solvent through the gas port to make sure it was open and break down anything in there. Extractor sounds like a good idea, but when manual cycling it works fine. Seems like the whole thing isn't getting enough gas, but I can't believe the 3" 2 shot didn't make any difference if that was the case.

Double check the orientation of the gas rings and make sure everything is moving freely along the magazine tube. As others have suggested clean the gas port with the appropriate size drill bit.

If that fails take a close look at the forearm to make sure it's not warped or cracked. The forearm in this system basically acts as a gas tube would on an AR. While not a totally sealed system it still needs to hold enough gas to run the action. If there is a large gap between the barrel and forearm that might be your problem.

I also know back in the day some smiths would open up the gas port on the 3" guns to get them to reliably run low base target loads. But since you had the same issue with 3" waterfowl loads something else is causing the issue.

FWIW.....all this info is coming from old conversations with my dad that I hope I'm remembering correctly. He spent quite a bit of time working on old 1100's.

Personally, all I've ever had to do to my 2 3/4" 1100 is replace O rings and clean it. Oh.....and tig weld a barrel ring on once.
