It wasn't bolted into the floor?

I'm wondering if someone knew there was a gun collection there, that they were prepared to haul a safe away.

Thanks for posting this up, more reason to by the biggest gun safe you can possibly afford, bolt it down and tell nobody you have it. Also security system is another nice addition.

I've yet to see thieves make off with a 600+lb gun safe loaded with a few hundred pounds. The guy probably had his guns stored in a cheap metal locker.

So it did. I didn't know AmSec made a safe under 300lbs, but apparently they do. Apparently it doesn't have a warranty against theft or fire either.

Bolt to floor yes, but add one also to the side or back. To the floor they can still maybe get to wiggle and then rocked which make the safe act as a large lever to pull the floor bolts out. Adding a bolt to the side or back in addition to the bottom makes the safe that much harder to get loose.

Good idea, Cobb.

I helped a guy move a 600+ lb safe, and it was easier than I expected it to be.

That might foil evil-doers, thought he, who don't know the safe is there, but won't stop any minimally prepared black-hearted gang of thieves who slip in and out of the night like a werewolf against a moonless sky.

Yep. If one's only concern is getting the safe out with no concern of collateral damage, sneaking into an unoccupied house, ripping the safe out, and getting it close to a door for a quick exit would not take long.

You could also weigh it down with a few cases of ammo to supplement the bolts!

Or maybe get one of those Liberty Safe-elert units, so that you (and the NSA) can keep track of your safe.

Two other things to take from this.

Make sure you have a list of all your firearms and their serial numbers. Don't keep the list in the safe or on your computer, cuz both could be gone. Which reminds me I need to update mine.

Be sure of your insurance policy for firearms coverage. Most will only cover like $5K without an additional rider. From what I understand, that $5K includes all ammo, reloading equipment and components, not just the guns themselves. I can't speak for all of you, but $5K won't go far at my place. An additional $30K coverage is pretty cheap, in comparison to the alternative. Same deal goes for other valuable collections, such as Coins, stamps, comic books, sports memorabilia.....etc. My current insurance company also required pictures and a list of SN's for them to issue the policy. I was a little uneasy about this at first, but it was explained to me that it was just to provide proof of ownership.

USAA will insure each individually. Also will cover it if you drop it out of a tree stand, lose it over the side of the boat, throw it at a bear, or any other number of situations. When the collection was smaller it seemed like the best value in town, now that the collection has grown, so has the bill, but... you gotta pay to play I guess. They have an online system where every time a new toy comes home, you can go in and add it, just need serial number and a description, you choose the value. Hit save and viola, it is insured.
