Making my own WD-40...where to buy Kerosene.

Ok Bench workers...I'm going to try to do "Homemade WD-40"

Image

It's only 50% wanting to save $$$ the last 3 dispenser cans crapped out on me and I had to puncture them and apply with a spray bottle.

A metal gallon can of WD-40 is about $20 and after googling 'Homemade WD-40' I see that lots of guys have been making their own formulas.

And lo and behold I have a gallon of 'paint thinner' and an opened but sealed can of Trans fluid on the workshop shelf. Those two substances seem to be the universal ingredients in a 50-50 mix but I thought I'd add a little kerosene as well.

I was at a Holiday gas station that sold Kero at about $4.00 / gal gave them a buck but the big fat nozzle would barely go into the red plastic can I had. What gives here? I do have a genuine 'Gerry Can' painted blue with a very large fill opening...I think I was facing a 'smart nozzle' that wouldn't dispense into the smaller throat. Plus the attendant said the can should really be Yellow.

30 years ago the guy I was buying Kero from for my garage heater (a rental shop) actually painted the Gerry Can blue himself and was worried about a big fine.

Questions:

Do they really need to be yellow now?

Will a gas station pump actually dispense into a Gerry Can with a wide fill opening or am I SOL.

What's your recipe for Homemade WD-40 Acetone/ tranny fluid?

Will a plastic spray bottle work with this mixture...I notice that the Gallon Can of WD-40 also comes with a steel bodied sprayer.

I make my own penetrating oil at home using a mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid. This seems to be, by far, the best penetrating oil I have ever used. The oil I make is nothing but acetone and automatic transmission fluid mixed 1:1.

The theory behind it is this:

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an excellent lubricant in and of itself. However, it is too thick to seep into rusted parts and bolts easily. The idea is that when you mix it 1:1 with acetone, it makes the ATF thin enough to seep into these small areas, and then the acetone evaporates leaving nothing but ATF to do its job.

So, with that said, Machinist’s Workshop Magazine did a test to see what is the best penetrating oil that came out in their April 2007 issue. While I’m unable to locate the exact article, here are the numbers they came up with:

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None …………….. 516 pounds .
WD-40 ………….. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ……… 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench … 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil …….. 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

Penetrating oil is what oil they used, and average load is what the force required to bread the bolt free was (measured in foot-pounds). Supposedly this test was done by rusting several bolts in a controlled manner, so that they were all stuck but still all exactly the same before the test.

If nothing else, the stuff is every bit as good as PB Blaster for a fraction of the price. I must warn you though…this is for metal objects only – the acetone can dissolve certain types of rubber and plastic.

Lastly, as you see in the picture, I even make it with used ATF. As long as it isn’t too burnt, the used stuff will work almost as well as new for this purpose. I measure with the plastic lid, and then store it in an old seafoam can. Pour the mixture into an old fashioned oiler to make it easy to dispense.

Diesel cans are yellow, Kero cans are blue.
Fleet Farm in Lakeville has K1- kero in the pump-for home heating, its off to the side, away from the gas pumps. Last time I bought some it had a normal size nozzle.
You can pull the MSDS for bulk WD-40 off there web page and get the actually ingredients, they will be in CAS# form so you will have to use the web to I.D. what each CAS# stands for. Basically the bulk WD-40 is Stoddard solvent (Varsol I think) and Mineral oil.
Paint thinner mixed with mineral oil will work for alot of things, and is actually what you get when you buy odorless mineral spirits. Brownells used to repackage it and sell it as a bulk gun cleaning solvent for parts washers, maybe they still do.

Ever stop to consider what a small quantity a 'lifetime supply' of penetrant is? Probably ounces...
Unless your some sort of mechanic who works on exposed fasteners of things like D9 Cats.
And remember- it's a PENETRANT- not a lubricant or protective coating.

I suspect the only thing kerosene would do is thicken, and stink up most of those concoctions.

The test you allude to was purportedly done by Machinist Workshop Magazine several years ago, I read it on a rimfire forum. As I recall, It was several identical fasteners( nuts and bolts) exposed to saltwater for a given length of time, and the torque required to break them was recorded. Stories about the test/ results appear in most car/ farm/ gunsmith forums. There are reports that the 'atf' was actually power steering fluid, and that not all atfs mix with acetone.
Given the physical, and potential heath hazards of Acetone, and the slight need for penetrants.
I just buy Kroil for stuff I need to break part, and use never-seez when reassembling, when applicable.
Also, a simple 2-cycle fuel (all my stuff mixes 50:1) would likely do the same thing, along with providing some lubrication and protective coating functions, at a similar hazard level.

Haven't bought any recently, but I think Menards and Home Debit sell them in pre packed 1gallons. Might be hard to find since it's summer. Yellow cans are for diesel. All the places I used to buy kerosene would only pump into a blue container.

I used to rebuild VW bugs (done over 100) and would spray WD-40 all over the place during dis-assembly...really used it as a cleaner first.

I have several opened and half used containers of 2 cycle oil....I'll try that with the Acetone and mix up a separate batch w/ ATF.

I used Kerosene to clean really greasy parts without worrying so much about starting a big fire.

I just did a front bearing on my Explorer and noticed all the rusty bolts / nuts in the area and hit them all w/ WD-40 as advance work on my next repair in that wheel well...If I've got the ingredients on the shelf...I might as well make up some homebrew and go crazy with it.

I'm closer to the Fleet Farm in BC, I'll give them a call to see what they have. I'm still wondering if I have a can with a larger opening if the diesel pump will operate.

Just saw it at Menards $20/ gal with metal bodied sprayer....no more of the finicky spray cans for me.

Buy WD by gallon myself when rebuilding a vehicle. Been using the same plastic spray bottle for at least 10 years.

kerosene is just very clean diesel fuel

They sell a very dainty version for oil lamps.

The Kero I was using for my torpedo heater.

Diesel is a bit stinky. and thick.
