How do I tell what sights my colt commander has on it ?

Postby bluto on Sat Jul 12, 2014 7:00 pm

Good evening all,

I am looking into night sights and found some for the commander but it reads...

"This is for a commander with a Novak .270 cut front sight and Novak .500 cut rear sight"

Pardon my ignorance, I did google search it but found nothing but my guess is the width of the cuts in the slide itself ?

Thanks !

1911s often have staked front sights and it's not something you can just replace willy nilly. I think Novak provides dovetail milling, but you'll have to mail them your slide and it will be a permanent and destructive (technical term, it won't ruin your gun or anything) modification.

Well, I am going to suggest that you get out a caliper and measure the base of the dovetail slots and see if you are right. I can't imagine what else those measurements could be, which kind of tells you that I don't know for sure either, but no other measurement dimension makes sense. More importantly, my 50GI does come with Heine Tritium Night sights, and while they have a certain allure and style to them, I have pretty much decided that even high buck sights like these are WORTHLESS unless you are in a completely blacked out setting like a jungle in Vietnam or my back yard, which comprises about 50 acres of woods and is out far enough so that the sky glow from the TC is nullified. If you're in any kind of civilized territory at all, just one street light in the wrong direction will wash out those sights and make them useless.

Crimson Trace lasergrips, however, which come in both red and now the more daylight visible green, on the other hand, are a very good aiming tool, and if you're planning on taking a shot, the muzzle flash and report will show your position clearly 2 seconds later anyway. Plus the 1st muzzle flash will wash out your night vision, so any glow in the dark night sights are a one shot deal anyway. Like I said, the sights I have are high buck tritium sights, and lining up those two dots requires complete darkness that you can't get in an urban setting. One street light behind you and you're screwed from the get-go.

Sorry to be a buzz-kill, but that's my experience, and if it's that dark then it's likely that the assailant can't really see you, which could have some very nasty repercussions in the trial afterwards, provided civilization hasn't collapsed altogether.

Not at all a buzzkill, I appreciate the help and it makes sense and I don't see me having the funds anytime soon to pay for P2C renew fees and class fee so it will just be for range and home protection use for now.

Maybe someday santa will bring me a cool set of laser grips... :P

Thanks again for the wisdom / info.

Keep in mind that you can find night sights that are made to stake the front sight. Just need to search for that option. I know Brownells and Midway carry them.
