What to get a guy with an AR-10?

Postby CJB on Tue Nov 18, 2014 10:06 am

My dad won a DPMS Oracle AR-10 at a banquet earlier this year. For Christmas, I'd like to get him something for it. Now I'm in no way versed in the world of AR, so I'm looking for some suggestions.

If you had a DPMS Oracle in .308, what accessory would you get for it? He already put a scope on it, so that's out. Apparently STDs are not available for this either - that was my first thought.

Lets hear it!

The muzzle should be threaded 5/8x24, here is a link to the .30 caliber STD that would match in black phosphate:

You could pick him up a nicer stock (commercial tube size), the Magpul ACS-L would probably look and balance nicely for around $80.

It comes with a bone stock milspec trigger, the Geiselle G2S runs around $150 (or less around the holidays) and will give you a great, 4.5 pound 2-stage trigger pull. Otherwise the ALG Defense (a Geiselle subsidiary) QMS Trigger should still be a big upgrade and comes with optional JP lower power springs for $60 shipped from MDWS:

Yep, picked up my last one for $105 shipped from Primary Arms on their labor day sale, guessing we'll see some killer BF sales given the AR parts and ammo surplus this year.

If it were mine the first thing I would do is get a free float handguard followed by upgrading the trigger. APF Armory makes a great rail that is designed to go with the DPMS receivers. http://www.apfarmory.com/apf-dpms-compatible-lr308-t-mod-rail-w-acc/

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm leaning toward a bipod.

Careful if shopping for 'AR10' parts, he actually has a LR308 - there is no 'mil-spec' for .308 cal AR's and they build them slightly differently.

That said, PMAG's. Someone even has listed a few in the Marketplace.

Also recommend a trigger - anything that works on a AR15 will work on a LR308. Be careful that you don't get one that has a reduced power hammer if milsurp is going to be run thru it. I recommend the HyperFire.

I'm drooling for an Atlas bipod too. Be aware there is a new PSR version for extra $$. Whether the improvements are worth it is your call. http://www.accu-shot.com/catalog/produc ... cts_id=125

This is the standard 308 Oracle model with the 16" barrel, runs about 8 pounds unloaded; is this the rifle we're talking about?

$300 seems like a lot of money to put into a bipod on a carbine size rifle... particularly since you'd need to come up with a way to mount it first. A Magpul MOE forend and short rail section would run another $40 or so but should do the job. You can NOT just buy a standard AR15 free float tube that requires a custom barrel nut as the Armalite and DPMS uppers use a custom barrel nut size/thread.

The cost of the bipod alone would buy you a decent Vortex, Nikon or Redfield optic with a Nikon or Burris mount... or 500 rounds of Lake City Ammo... or a trigger + Magpul ACS-L stock, MOE midlength forend + MOE grip + STD muzzle device and a few boxes of ammo...

I like the sling idea, but I don't see a front sling mount due to the railed gas block vs standard FSB with the front loop.
