1,000 yard rifle

No ranges anything like 1,000 yards in SE Pennsylvania, but there are near the Twin Cities! So, what do you recommend as a rifle and scope that would allow me to work up to that distance? I'm not a hunter at the moment, so target calibers are ok. Need factory ammunition, but in time reloading would be feasible too.

I can get a good deal on a FN SPR A3G or A5M XP or go the Remington 700 with aftermarket stock route. Don't know much of anything about optics for those ranges.

Feel free to point me to decent sources for this on the web, if you know them.

.308 is a good starting point for shooting, as there is a substantial number of rifles available for not a lot of money that can shoot sub-MOA. Ammo is also plentiful and generally easy to find everywhere.
The Remington rifles are a good platform to start with, and you can use them for a future build project due to a plethora of parts in the aftermarket. With that said, FN SPRs are much higher grade rifles for not a lot more money. If you decide to look at a .308, spending the extra money on an FN or Tikka T3 CTR will yield better results in the long run with higher build quality.

Cartridges in the 6.5/.260 arena are flatter shooting and have better long range performance. These are cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x47 Lapua, .260 Rem, 6.5-284, etc. The problem is that ammunition tends to be harder to find locally and you wind up buying more online.

This is probably as close as you'll get to a 1000 yard target rifle without going custom build. 6mmBR is wonderful little cartridge.

Don't know what you are looking to spend, But I have a very nice .260 Remington for sale on this very board that would fit the 1,000 yd bill nicely:

As for optics for 1000 yards, I stick with iron sights.

For optics, if you go to a match you'll see quite a few Nightforce 12-42X. http://nightforceoptics.com/benchrest/12-42x56-precision-benchrest/

If you want to save some cash the Sightron SIII 10-50X is pretty good alternative. http://info.sightron.com/Riflescopes/SIII-Series/SIIISS1050X60LRFCH/

Before dropping a serious amount of coin on a rifle and or scope, I would recommend spending some time visiting with those actually shooting and competing at 1000 yards. GRRC up in Harris is the only 1000 yard range I know of in the state and I think they run a Long Range League on Thursday nights in the summer.

Another venue you might try is MLPS Rifle Club in St. Francis. They run a Highpower League twice a month until spring and an International style match the second Sunday of every month.

Iron sights? Really? Forgive me, I'm an "evil, modern sporting, black rifle" kinda guy and have NO experience, whatsoever with bolt guns, but you can't possibly be using irons out to a grand? Huh?????

Not quite the irons I had in mind. They're like nothing I've ever seen before. But, I guess they are still technically iron sights.

Absolutely. As far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to shoot. The sights are definitely fancier than what you'd have on a hunting rifle, but when you get right down to it they are just 2 circles that you line up on the target. Here's 1000 yard target I shot this summer at the Long Range State Championship at the Harris range that I was particularly pleased with:

The X-ring on the LR target is 10", and the 10-ring is 20". So not sub-MOA or anything, more like 1.5 MOA. Still pretty decent for 26 rounds from a .308 at 1000 yards with a sling and iron sights. Here's a pic of the rifle:

If you want any info on this type of shooting, just let me know.

I'd try .22WMR, only a ~215 foot drop from the factory zero. When you put them on paper it'll impress those f-class snobs.

What exactly is a "factory zero"?
