New York flags 278 gun owners as mentally unstable

Here's why doctors are asking us if we own a gun. It's started.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reported last week that since the law’s enactment, the state has collected 38,718 names in a database of individuals who have been found at-risk for owning guns by psychiatrists and other health professional

Psychiatrists should be outraged for being thrust into a position to determine mental competency to own a firearm.

Wow. Thats a big number. Don't know enough on what the criteria is but if a person is really nuts and has guns, I don't have a problem of taking the guns. I do have a problem if they don't give back the money invested in those guns or keep them permanently and don't return them if the person gets medically cleared. I suspect once those guns are collected, they are gone for good. Wouldn't doubt some official taking dibs on the good firearms collected.

I think if the guns were not used in a crime but the owner is no longer allowed to possess them the owner should either be reimbursed or allowed to transfer ownership to an eligible friend or family member. If no eligible person will accept the firearms then maybe allow them to sell back to a gun shop. Certainly they will get much less than retail value but it's a better alternative than surrender to confiscation. The real crime is that I'm sure it is much easier for an anti-gun health professional to make a simple note in the health record that they feel the patient 'may' be suffering from mental illness thus making them ineligible to own a firearm than it is for the patient to fight it and get their gun rights back (and likelihood of getting confiscated firearms back is probably 0%).

What planet are you people living on? The firearms will be destroyed or kept indefinitely until they can be destroyed.

The only chance a person might have of getting weapons back is to higher a lawyer. That lawyer will charge far more than the property is worth for their services.

It's a rigged system.

Nanny state medicine/healthcare has now become a portal into one's private life. The Affordable Health Care Act will not make anyone any healthier, nor is it affordable.

I find it interesting talking to doctors that are my contemporaries about medical issues. Symptoms and lifestyles are now being treated as disease states. For example, smokers now have "Tobacco Use Disorder." Not a bad habit but a disease.

Firearm owners will soon suffer from "Firearm Possession Syndrome" or something similar.

Or having a gun in the home at all is defined as a dangerous environment for children.

I wonder if these folks have a chance to rebut the findings of these so call doctors. If not, sounds like guilty until proven innocent. They can't get laws passed to get our guns so they put ******** in medical coverage and probably soon see it in your home owners policy too. Can see it now, add 1000 per month for having guns in your home.
