One would think that would be the best way to solve this problem....

They should take it one step further and make it illegal to kill people. Problem solved!

It doesn't mean much to me as I can't shoot it at the indoor range, but it is just another BS law that keeps the anti's moving towards total gun control.I'll run by Wally World and see if they have any left, but, any 5.56 round has plenty of stink on it and I can't think of any reason I'd want to "pierce" armor. There's no armor in front of the targets at the ranges I go to.

I can't think of a reason why the second amendment was written only for gun range use.

Ignore the armor piercing part it's quite trivial to their end game.

The ATF has screwed the pooch three ways:

The "sporting purposes" clause. The 2A is not about the sporting use of firearms, but somehow we are stuck trying to justify everything in typical "fudd" catagories. Such as "AP" ammo or MSR's.

The miscategorizing of M855 as AP, when it does not meet the definition of AP due to the dual steel/lead core and the thin jacket.

Them now attempting to claim that M855 is a common "AP" handgun round. It's primarily a rifle round, and it is not a true AP round per their own definitions.

"Sporting purposes" is in statute somewhere. Not sure if it is in the armor piercing statute but it's in firearms importing statutes. WE NEED TO GET RID OF IT. As has been pointed out once or twice on the interwebs, the 2A isn't about sporting.

I can't remember if "sporting purposes" comes from the GCA68 or if it's something the ATF pulled out of it's rectum when given regulatory authority by the GCA68. Either way it needs to be struck down in court. Maybe it's the next case the SAF and Alan Gura can champion?
I will never apologize for being an American.

SAF and Gura have a strategy. It may be slow but it seems to be working.

If Wikipedia is a credible source on this topic, the '68 bill created the "sporting purposes" standard for imported firearms, along with a lot of other regulations including the FFL system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_Control_Act_of_1968

Clearly there is some creep in the precedent set since it has come up again in other forms of firearm/ammunition related regulation including the current enforcement changes on M855 ammunition. The irony is, if I am reading articles on the topic correctly, the "sporting purposes" classification on imported firearms was generally supported by domestic firearms manufacturers and their paid lobbyists who helped pass the bill as it reduced competition and ultimately helped their bottom line. It isn't always the anti's who are working against gun owners and American citizens who wish to exercise their constitutionally protected rights.

Armslist post that someone is looking to trade 2000 rounds of XM855 1:1 for 55 grain lead core ammo (M193 I assume) if someone's in the Mankato area:

http://www.armslist.com/posts/4047250/m ... -anywhere-

Ammunition Depot has M855 in stock at $0.50 a round: http://www.ammunitiondepot.com/Federal- ... lpc120.htm

LAX Ammo has cases of PMC XTac 62 grain M855 also at $0.50 a round: https://www.laxammo.com/ammunition/5.56 ... ock/50-178

They also have the Independence (IMI produced 55 grain M193) for a much saner $0.31 cents a round:

This is an article I just read dealing with what could be the beginning of a pincer movement strategy being used by the anti gunners via the ATF and the EPA.

What gun-rights advocates fear — not without reason — is that this is the beginning of a pincer movement, with the ATF banning non-lead ammunition as a threat to armor-wearing police officers and the EPA banning lead ammunition as a toxin.

This is a big concern of mine as well. Or it's the just the first step in another plan.

I like that, but it involves reason and logic. Still has a chance, though.

Similar topic from a different angle. The EPA getting involved with the Lead issue - See Link below. Make no mistake - the Anti's will be hitting this from any and every angle they can find. if you can't outlaw guns, make the components illegal...............
