ATF to reclassify / ban M855 ammo next month?

We have to import PURE lead, we still have smelters in the USA processing mixed lead alloy from many sources like wheel weights and car batteries. A single car battery terminal is a couple oz of pure lead so I grab as many as I can at the scrap yards to smelt down for mixing into bullet alloy.

To whom it may concern,

I am voicing my objection to the proposed ban of commonly used M855 5.56 ammunition.
M855 fails to meet the definitions of armor piercing ammunition under 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(17)(B) , as it's core is not wholly or primarily of steel, but rather a steel nose with a lead core, and the jacket does not comprise more than 25% of the total projectile.

If the status of armor piercing is based on it's ability to penetrate body armor, nearly any rifle caliber, lead core or otherwise, of significant velocity will penetrate body armor. The intent of the original framework was to ban armor piercing ammunition of calibers primarily used in handguns. Since M855 5.56 is most commonly used in rifles for target shooting and certain types of hunting, it is not primarily used as a handgun caliber.

M855 5.56 ammunition should remain readily accessible for sale to the general public.

Actually, after reading the article you so kindly linked (thank you), I still stand by my statement for the most part. There are NO more lead smelters left in America that smelt lead from mined ore. Yes, I am aware that we have recycling facilities around the county that get lead from recycling batteries, wheel weights and bullet traps, etc. My point was that quite a few Federal agencies are getting TOO powerful, the EPA being one of them. Yes, I realize that this rise in power started before Obams took office, but the Obama administration....rather than reining in their power, has let them run on unchecked and it's my OPINION that they now feel emboldened to do whatever they want. Now the ATF wants to limit our ammo selections when there was never any prior problem.

To be clear, primary lead smelting has a pretty large impact on the environment and worker health - look at some of the photos of the town of Herculaneum - and is also expensive to mine and smelt in the US due to ore purity, labor and utility rates.

The primary ore in the US got to be too expensive at this point....it'll be back when ore in China or South America gets more expensive or when new technology makes it more cost-effective to remove and refine (think fracking for oil).

Such is the nature of commodities.

I'm not sure if I'm encouraged by the numbers so far, still less than 60k have signed the white house petition (100k minimum required for a white house response) while 19.5k have used the Save M855 service to fax the ATF and their representatives. For comparison, AR15.com had nearly 6.8 MILLION unique users as of December, 2014.

I've had 3 people in the last 2 days that had no idea this was happening. I've also had somebody tell me that Obama is banning the AR-15 by executive action.

In my opinion, the petition is useless and doesn't accomplish anything. If the signature threshold is met, the Administration issues a response on the topic. What exactly does that get us? However, if you want to sign it, it's here:

The 2 avenues that I feel are worthwhile are:

Contact the BATFE: While there is nothing that says the agency needs to listen, hopefully the sheer volume of correspondence will make them realize they are going to create more problems for their agency.

Thanks! I already used the GOCRA site to shoot off a couple e-mails. Now I just used the nssf.org site to do the same. The white house petition IS useless. Here's what THAT one does....it puts you on their e-mail list so that THEY can send you propaganda e-mail on the Whitehouse's positions and opinion of things. I get an e-mail from them once or twice a week.
