^ What he said. I'm good with running as long as there's somewhere to run to, but my wife has a muscular condition that flares up unpredictably, and I'm NOT leaving her behind. I certainly wouldn't shoot given better options, but if I am (or especially we are) cornered, I want to go hand to hand with a deranged person even less than I want to shoot said deranged person, and I really don't WANT to shoot anyone. I never said I'd be happy about it, just that I'd be willing to do it if it was unavoidable.

Also, what ttousi said about the parking lot is a valid point. The destination is not the whole trip, and the portions of the trip where you have to be on foot are pretty clearly the portions during which you're most vulnerable.

all hospitals in the twin cities have security available to walk you to and from your car. also some of the metro hospitals have valet parking available for about what it would cost you to park in a ramp
