With many rifles, especially rifles with shorter barrels, like the "pistols" that shoot rifle rounds, rifles with muzzle brakes, and higher than average velocity rifles, it is impossible to get to safe sound levels if you don't use a suppressor in addition to other hearing protection.

HF 1434 passed the House 89-40, on to the Senate.

All 4 bills passed by more than a 2:1 margin. Not only did all of our bills pass, but the gun control floor amendments introduced by Dehn and Schoen were defeated by overwhelming majorities.

It was a good day!

The silencer bill has been added to HF849, an omnibus bill. It is back in the House where it is currently listed as Second Reading. The MN Revior page has not updated the inclusion of the silencer bill to the omnibus bill yet. I expect the bill to go to the Senate where it will pass then on the governor. I personally think the governor will sign it. The other options are to veto (unlikely) or let it become law without his signature (possible).

It is still a good idea to contact your Reps and Senators to urge them to pass the bill.

One thing to consider is that the omnibus bill includes spending that is earmarked for public safety. If Dayton vetoes it (because of the pretty minor gun rights stuff), he risks looking like he doesn't care about keeping people safe and reducing crime. At least that's the way it could easily be spun in the media.

I'm not saying I 100% believe that he'll sign the bill if it hits his desk, but inclusion in this omnibus bill seems like it increases the possibility of it actually happening.

HF 849 has finally been updated at HF 849 status

It is on its 2nd reading and hopefully is passed this week and goes on to the Senate. HF 1434 is still in the Senate Judiciary where I expect it will stay until it dies as it is now part of the omnibus HF 849 and will be passed that way instead.

While I'm happy that this may work in our favor, I think the idea of omnibus bills is generally a bad one. This is how all kinds of crap on a variety of issues gets forced through.
