Gun Grease opinions

Postby Holland&Holland on Wed Jul 01, 2015 7:40 am

So we have had discussions on maintenance and lubrication before, but I do not recall any discussions on gun grease. Previously I have been in the camp of using oil not grease for all applications except break action shotgun hinge pins. Never really was picky about which grease for this but my current tube is running out and started looking at what tube to replace it with. In that process I realized there are folks using grease much more than I thought would be popular. So thoughts on the following:

What greases do you use and for what gun applications?

What grease do you use for shotgun hinge pins and why?

Do you use grease on pistol rails (seems some are particularly on SS 1911s)? If so what grease and why?

Larry Potterfield in his AR-15 assembly videos uses grease on the springs when assembling. I have always just oiled, thoughts?

Do you use grease on the locking lugs of your ARs? Is so what grease and why?

Other grease related thoughts.

IMHO, the answer to most firearms lubrication questions, grease or oil, is Mobil 1 (or whatever other synthetic lubricant happens to be on sale at Fleet Farm).

Really easy to overthink lubrication, cars or guns. This will be an interesting thread. I'm looking forward to sifting through all the objective data that will be presented.

the only guns I use grease on is my M1 Garand and M14. I used a spent 45 ACP shell to make a tool for lubing the roller on the bolt for the M14. Otherwise, very specific application with a wood stir stick.

The only thing I use is molybdenum grease.

Otherwise, I just use a little CLP for lube on the rest of the stuff.

Where do you grease on your M1?

Where the bolt lugs slide and the face of the hammer where it rubs on the bottom side of the bolt. under the barrel where the op-rod slides against it. Not a lot either. About it. those same places on the M14 too.

Seems as though I only use grease when I assemble AR's and even then it's only on barrel and barrel nut.

I've been hearing good things about the slip 2000 lubes so I'm going to try them out. Very interested in their EWL. https://www.slip2000.com/blog/side-by-side-review-of-slip-2000-ewl-and-clp/

Use grease very rarely, but when I do I use Super Lube.

It is recommended by Rohrbaugh to use on their R9 pistols.

If you want to be HSLD you have to use SLideGlide... 8-)

I RTFM and follow the lubrication instructions provided by the manufacturer. Different climates, different materials, different types of mechanical interaction all call for different "best" lubes.

As general rules go, I think JJ summed it up best in the other thread on the same subject: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=48059&p=498643&hilit=slide+glide#p498619

"If it slides grease it, if it rotates oil it. Any surfaces that aren't subjected to sliding/rotating across other surfaces still need some oil to protect the finish.

Also consider that weather has a large effect on what lubes you should use. In cold weather grease is generally not ideal, as its weight will heavily slow cycle speeds (in general). If you are shooting in 70+ degree weather, you likely can use more grease than oil."

+1 for SlideGlide. I'm not sure how HSLD it is but it works.

My understanding is that slide glide is just expensive mobile 1

Then use Mobile 1. We're talking about guns, not rocket ships.
