BWCA garmin 650 rino maps

Postby nhluke on Sun Aug 02, 2015 7:44 pm

I've been checking out a few areas online, but curious if any of you recommend any specific maps etc fow a bwca trip on a Garmin rino? I've used this device only a couple times out west and either need to change info on maps or purchase some.
I know they aren't needed and honestly feel better simply using a printed map and compass... but I'm trying to learn these things.
Thanks

I've been using Garmin 76S and 76C for 10 years, but it's been on the open ocean and they are the backups to the main Garmin system. Garmin map coverage is pretty broad, so I doubt you will find something for the BWCA alone, and I doubt you will find something even for just Minnesota. Check out the Garmin website and see what they have. In addition, get the Gold series maps, as they are the highest detail and sometimes if things go wrong in the bush you will be glad you spent the money.

Thanks
I'll check into that/get em.
I saw a couple references to bwca specific maps for 100 bucks, but have not actually seen them listed. They may have been part of a bigger package not bwca only.

I purchased the Garmin BWCA this spring for our trip in May. They are very good maps and worked well us. They show all the portages, trails, campsites, and also water depth. I would highly recommend them, they were worth the money.

I know nothing about the riino so make sure they are compatible.

GPS is nice but don't rely only on that while doing long treks within BWCA. Learn to read the maps and use a compass too

quietjourney or paddleplanner are some that I know of. That was years ago.
