Good place in the metro to get my Garand fixed?

Postby RmeJu on Tue Aug 04, 2015 8:18 pm

Title pretty much says it all. My M1 is acting up and ive been meaning to get it fixed. Not a museum piece, I just use it for plinking. Any tips on someone who knows their way around a Garand would be appreciated.

ETA: I've been told I have "op rod disconnect." Basically, the op rod disengages with the bolt lug upon firing, and travels rearward after disengaging, and gets stuck. It's a PITA to disassemble, and I don't think it's good for the gun.

I don't know of anyone local.

The CMP can do any work required to get her up and running.

The most common cause for Garand problems is a weak op rod spring.
I buy my replacements from Orion7 http://www.m1garand.com/store/m1_garand_orion7_17-7stainless-steel_operating_rod_spring.html

A nice web site that gives info on keeping the Garand working properly is at garandgear.com

I thought maybe it was staying up late, bringing home strangers, or just being a smart a**.

Funny! I was thinking, at the Garand's age, it would be more memory loss, confusion, bad-temperedness, and yelling at the kids to "get off the lawn"! Also general whining about the poor work ethic of those M-16 year olds, and the out-of-control behavior of those M-4 year olds.....

To the OP... sorry I have no suggestions.

I was able to tune both my Garand and M14 to toss brass close enough to not chase it or put it into the next shooter.

If you want to get together and work through this, I'd be game to help you out.

Don't ever see you offering to help folks out.

And it would seem you were a bit myopic to truly understand what I was saying in the first place.

Sounds like your guide lug (or tab) is worn out.

This happened to me on an HRA I have.

I sent the op rod to Columbus machine for repair.

http://www.columbusmachine.com/oprod.htm

M1 Garand Operating Rod Specifications

Piston Diameter: .5260 to .5253 (under .5250 calls for rejection)
Piston Thickness: .190 to .155
Tab/Lug Height: .320 to .317 (under .310 calls for rejection)
Tab/Lug Thickness: .100 to .095
Tab/Lug Width: .265 to .235
