Nice name-drop Patrick... I have heard of MechTech for Glocks but didn't know they had 1911 uppers as well... Since a 1911 and a PCC are on my shopping list I might be able to kill two birds with one wad of cash. (A Glock of some flavor is also on my shopping list, but several guns below the 1911 or the PCC... although maybe that bumps the Glock higher as it would also scratch two items off my shopping list and I could cheaply and easily get low capacity [~10 round] and standard capacity [15-19 round] and high [capacity 30-50 round] mags that would serve double duty.)

But seriously,I've had two Mech Techs, should have kept the last one. They work great. The only thing is the recoil spring makes a funny twanging noise much like many of the old AR's did.Didn't bother me but some people find it annoying. That and the bolt doesn't hold open on the last shot, but that is quickly fixed by installing another magazine.Cheap too,as long as you don't hang too much junk on them.

Just curious, what do you feel is wrong with the Hi Point carbines?

A "budget" firearm with a life time warranty no matter how many owners. You should try one some time.

Source for the discontinued status please... The best I can find is a rumor thread from a forum in 2012. Since it is still in the 2015 print catalog and has been sold since 2003 I am a little skeptical.

I believe it was only the .45ACP model that was discontinued.

Im a member on that forum with the same user name. This topic comes up frequently. Dealers can longer get them. There is still plenty of existing stock I suppose. http://berettaforum.net/vb/showthread.php?t=114693

Beretta PX4 carbine

Postby PhilaBOR on Mon Aug 03, 2015 6:14 am

Never owned or shot one, but lots of people say the HiPoint carbines are reliable.
A pistol caliber carbine would be handy in close quarters but you should study over penetration of pistol rounds through typical wall materials. Wall o Truth and Guntalk have done extensive testing. If you live alone in the woods a mile from the nearest neighbor, don't worry. If you are close to other houses or live in an apartment, it's critical. The ballistic tests always come out for .223/5.56 or birdshot as being the best combination of stopping power with minimum over penetration. 12 ga birdshot is devastating at close range, leaves a 3/4" hole in people. At long range, not so much. What's the longest shot you're likely to take in home defense? Your results may vary.

I have a CX4 in 9mm which is a fun gun to shoot. It is set up for the same Beretta 92 mags my pistol uses which makes it more economical to use. It is one of the options I have for home defense, mostly for use on coyotes which make irregular passes through the yard looking for chickens and my wife's little dog. 147 gr hollow points have done in more than one song dog who was not fast enough to run when the door opened up. It has replaced my AR-15 as it is less noisy and my M-1 carbine as I have more faith in the larger, heavier bullet of the 9mm.

There is a pull out rail on the fore end of the stock which I hung a Streamlight TLR-1 with a pressure switch. It gets me enough light to reach out as far as I can hit with the peep sights at night- about 40 yards or so. I really need to mount a more powerful light as well as add a top rail (mine is an early one which did not come with a rail on top) for an optic. Then I think the coyotes would be in trouble for a greater distance.

I have a Cx4 in 9mm and .45ACP. Great rifles and very handy. They handle like they are even shorter than they are. People poo-poo the plastic parts, but to be honest I have never heard of parts failure either, so I have not bothered purchasing any kind of upgrade yet.

Beretta PX4 carbine

Postby LumberZach on Mon Sep 14, 2015 8:15 pm

I've seen the beretta's sbr'd and I'm pretty jealous of them. I don't think you would be in a worse position by buying one. Never heard anything bad about them at least. Have you looked at other options much? I shoot glocks so I am looking into 9mm AR's that take glocks mags. Just saying... Also, if tapatalk didn't require signing into a separate deal is share photos I've pulled from the Internet.
