Where is the best place to post a gun for sale for FTF sale?

I have a glock 42 that just hasn't grown on me and I'm looking to sell it. The guy I spoke with at my local gun store & range said I could likely get a lot more for it if I sold it myself. The amount more would make it worth the effort, but I've never sold a gun before.

I'm familiar with the laws in MN regarding this; it is the practical steps for advertising and the actual transaction that I'm unsure about.

I'm only comfortable doing a face to face where I can get copy of the buyer permit to purchase/carry and MN state ID. I'm in the Twin Cities area and don't want to drive too far for the transaction.

For those of you who've sold handguns face-to-face (FTF), what have you found to be the most effective site to post guns for sale.

Any other tips for FTF sales would be appreciated. I was thinking that I would meet the buy at the gun range. That way they can try before they buy. But it seems poor etiquette to sell a gun in a gun store/range. I'll definitely ask the range if they are okay with this. If it's not kosher to sell at the range, where do you recommend the transaction take place? I'm not comfortable inviting strangers to my home to buy a gun.

For marketing, I would suggest the For Sale Firearms section of this forum - The people here know what things should cost, so only word of caution is to do your homework and price it realistically and add pictures to the listing.

As for the how, I'd meet in a public space - most of my transactions have been in parking lots away from the main traffic. I would only deal with someone who has some history on this forum which gives you some assurance they are legit. Gun range is a nice thought, but your right your sorta cutting into their business and its going to cost someone some money to rent the lane etc. - a gun is a gun, if someone wants it they can function test it on their own and if you leave the door open for them to contact you if they have a problem, that should suffice - back to the known member of this forum, you have some assurances they won't punk you if they are regulars here. I wouldn't sell on the site of the gun range - bad form, however, after the test, if you wanted to complete the sale, you could certainly meet up shortly after somewhere to complete the exchange. you are on the right track looking for a PTP/PTC and a current Gov.ID I would also ask the question whether they are purchasing this for themselves. Also, take a good look around for accessories or ammo that is specific to that gun- much easier to sell it to the buyer of the gun as a package deal than trying to unload the stuff a month later.

Examine it(the ID) to your hearts content, but if you ultimately need some greater level of security, go to/ through an FFL.

Most gun ranges won't want private sales occuring on their premises, however most are also FFLs.

I have no issue using one of my range tokens to let them fire it, but, yes. Selling at the range would be bad form. I don't think I'll even bother asking, because the answer seems obvious, and I'd like to stay on good terms. On the other hand, I don't want the hassle of meeting at the gun range for a test shoot and then meeting somewhere else for the transaction. I think I'll just given them a week to try it out and return it if they change their mind.

Well, I was planning to have two copies of the Bill of Sale. On my copy, I was going going to write down the permit & ID numbers. I was thinking of taking a photo with my smart phone, and write the numbers on the form afterward to save time and to have a copy of the IDs on file. Not sure why anyone would have an issue with this. If they do, I probably don't want to sell to them—unless I'm missing something.

most charge about $20. That is the safest route, but more hassle and some people like the idea of not having everything registered - those are mostly the Tin Foil hat crowd, but their money is just a green and they may have a point. Recording the sale the serial number and a cell phone picture of the id and PTP/PTP would be pretty comprehensive. At the end of the day, its your sale and you can demand what you want - it will be up to the buyer to comply or pass. I would let them know what you are requiring prior to the sale to properly set expectations so they aren't surprised when you whip out the mobile phone and start snapping away. Wouldn't be an issue for most.

I always ask to see an ID and a PTP/PTC, but you have no need to save my DL#, PTC# or my photo.

Name and address? knock yourself out.

Depending on the FFL, $20-75 is not uncommon, and many FFL's will not handle transfers for non-customers, so plan accordingly.

Identity theft is a major concern. It is enabled with the type of private info found on a DL.
Who knows what you'll do with the copy of their license; use it for nefarious purposes? allow it to fall into the wrong hands? innocently throw it in the trash for someone to find?

Exactly. Identity theft is a real concern.

The visual inspection of the cards is your assurance that the person is who they say so you can earnestly complete the transaction. You have no requirement to maintain a paper trail and as long as you can truthfully assure authorities later that you inspected them if something bad happens with that buyer and your former gun that's all that really counts. Would it be nice to keep all that info for extra 'proof'? Sure. But that's a risk very few people will allow you to take with their identities.

My bill of sale states what they had for ID and or permit but I do not require or record numbers. It also states they are legal to purchase and own etc so you're covered by their signature which you can check against MN license. As others mentioned you aren't taking copies or pics of my info. Requiring that or FFL likely eliminates potential buyers.

Sold 2 guns on this forum, bought some stuff also. It is nice to see they have some history on the forum. Like others said I always ask in advance to see PTP or PTC for eligibility and DL to verify identity. I do not make a bill of sale, unless the buyer requests but none have. I have a book that I keep with my firearms, serial #s, and approximate value, so if I sell a gun I write down the first and last name of the buyer and their city of residence. If there was ever an issue, I confirmed their papers and met my responsibilities, and the fact that the person had a confirmed MN DL means their info should be easily searchable. I have always met in the far end of a parking lot of a public place like a Menards, then hop in a vehicle and discreetly check the wares and either complete the sale or move on. Especially if everyone has a PTC, it should really be a non-issue in a vehicle.

Have you ever had an issue with people not wanting to write down their permit and DL numbers? From other responses here, it seems that would be an issue for many people.
