Nope not a crime - petty misdemeanors are an infraction - not a crime, civil penalties are not a crime. You can be found not guilty of murder and still found responsible in a civil proceeding and pay a fine.Administrative violations are not a crime.

It's a crime in that they steal money from you under threat of force for having done it. How it breaks down in the minutia is a semantics argument that you've taken up because my point is more valid than yours Donn. ;) It's a punishable offense: aka Crime.

I think someone already said it, but geeezzzzzz....buy a separate range bag AND carry on bag....keep the separate, in different rooms even as the TSA does occasionally test for explosive residue on items....and DO NOT EVER use your carry on bag for ANYTHING gun related. Problem solved. :)

Very good point/easy way to avoid having a problem. To add to it, who really wants toxic gunshot residue on their clothing and/or personal items anyway?

That is what I do. Range bags are for the range. Backpack for traveling. Ammo and firearms are transported in specific bags, boxes, and cases. Those are never used for travel.

Firearms and ammo are locked up after visits to the range.

Firearms and ammo are accounted for and storage is not left undone lest it be forgotten and security is compromised.

I hate the excuse that someone forgot the firearm was in the bag. So they had a firearm left unattended and basically out of their control. Firearms are not something that should ever be forgotten. Forget targets, ear protection, eye protection... The firearm should never be forgotten.

Surprised no one has mentioned that firearms as checked luggage have been stolen.
