I have met him. For a guy whose job involves dealing with the public he is very deficient in his social skills. He has the "deer in the headlights" facial expression. He looks like he is trying so hard not to snap into a rage.

Ever see a flattering photo of him?

Nope.

I met him when he ran against Dave Durenburger. That was before all of his health problems and I remember him being very energetic and outgoing. Quite a contrast to the current Governor.

He's proof that liberals are miserable people. I don't think he comes up with all of this stuff on his own. He is being coached and played by the big DFL honchos in the state. The guy really is miserable as well as emotionally fragile. Look at September 11, 2001 when he fled DC for who knows where. The time we a functioning senate the most and he's off to parts unknown. Any guesses where he was?

Maybe he was in his bunker in South Dakota with his trust fund.

I'm not a Dayton fan by any means, but if you're going to disparage the man for one of his many foibles, the least you could do is get the facts straight. In fact, he actually stayed in DC that day, and returned to the Capitol building. The incident you cited occurred in October 2004, where he closed his office on Capitol Hill over "security concerns", even though no threat assessments had been issued, and no other elected officials in DC closed their offices.

Honest question for discussion.

In the metro Twin Cities - do you believe that white and minority permit holders are consistently treated equally by the police?

If yes, why?
If not, why not?

Given the fact that I shoot competition with several metro LEO's, while of course there are some bad apples in every bunch, the professionalism that I have seen from these officers makes me think that they show no favoritism and treat everyone with respect.

I can't say about CCW issues, as my bad dealings with LEO have only been in one town... Northfield. That was a joke- I didn't have a gun and they decided to search in the name of "officer safety". -40 windchill and they had me standing on the side of the road for 20 minutes. Of course, that was 10 years ago, maybe they are better now...

No real evidence to back this up but I think it depends on the situation. A guy at 3:00pm in an Accord with 5 bags from Cub on the back seat is gonna get different attention than a guy riding around at 11:00pm in an '88 Buick with 22" wheels, a dope smoking baby mama, blaring rap music, and with an infant in the back seat. Point is it's not so much race as the scenario that is presented.

Portray yourself as what the other person perceives as normal get treated normal, portray yourself as a thug get treated like a thug.

As much as some would deny it, we all profile/stereotype/judge books by their covers, etc. It's part of our evolutionary survival mechanism. Stereotypes do not develop in the absence of some basis in fact. Race may be one element, but the other factors you mentioned start adding up fast. Take the human part out of it. I'd be far more likely to reach down and pet someone's black lab than a pit bull. Could the lab be vicious and the pit be gentle? Sure, but the odds suggest otherwise.

That sounds like an interesting story. I'm assuming there is more to the story as this doesn't seem right. How did the LEO know you had a permit and why would they detain you to search your vehicle? Sounds like something that would be actionable or at least worth a letter to the Chief to educate the Officers about properly handling future similar stops.

I stand corrected. He flew the coop during the Anthrax scare. Any idea where he went?

They didn't know...and at the time, I didn't have one. This was just before shall issue. Their justification was irratic driving for the stop, but they did not give me a field sobriety test or anything. The cop who pulled me over asked if I had any weapons and I said not to my knowledge, and it went downhill from there.

I did call the chief, who said that he had to back his guys up.

Boy that stinks. I am generally an LE supporter but they definitely push the envelope of their authority some times. There is an element that loves to mess with the "lesser " beings on the planet.
