I also shoot at horse and hunt and can tell you from experience that simply clipping or stapling paper to their chewed up backers will show a bunch of weird things in the paper. Once, my uncle was convinced my glock 34 was keyholing at 10 yards. This is just a problem as mentioned above with the target not being close enough to the backer.
