RPR now in 300WM & 338LM

Postby Bearcatrp on Sat Oct 13, 2018 3:37 pm

Interesting. Check out the twist for the 338. My savage 110 FCP is 1:9, Ruger is 1:9.375.

That 338LM is very interesting to me. Must resist.

I’ll wait until the reviews come out before deciding if I want to sell my savage FCP for the Ruger. Scratching my head why that particular twist. Hoping oldman chimes in on this.

Oh, boy. Was planning on one on 6.5 this winter. Now might have to upsize. Maybe a .50 in the future?

I went with the Savage Stealth Evolution.

I believe Ruger is using this twist for the 236-250 grains projectiles most shooters will use to reduce recoil, away from the 285-300 grain projectiles which generate more recoil but must have a tighter twist to allow their BC to work properly.

Barrels are easily changeable by a good gunsmith who has the proper gages. Buying a barrel blank from K&P, buying a Manson finish reamer, specifying what twist you want, specifying threads on muzzle end, and you can easily change to any game you wish to try. By buying a reamer you can specify changes that will increase the accuracy potential, but some changes will require reloaded ammo only.

I order barrels in different twist rates for use in my 50BMG Target rifle. Factory military projectiles weigh 647 to 705 - the projectiles I use weigh 800-815 with 3 different styles requiring a 1:13.7-1:14 twist away from the standard 1:15. K&P will make barrels from 1:4 twist to 1:38 in any length up to 45" in either Stainless Steel or Chrome-Moly.

Thanks Oldman. I shoot 285 ELD-M out of my 1:9 twist 338LM. A little stout but not to bad. Wouldnt get the ruger if it won't shoot the 285 bullets.

Got this reply from ruger about the twist:

The 9.375" twist rate used on the 338 Lapua Magnum Precision works just fine with both light and heavy bullets. We have done extensive testing with an emphasis on 285 and 300 grain bullets from close range to extremely long range with very good results.

Are they full of it Oldman?

They will shoot.
What is their definition of "long range" ?
What is their definition of "with good results" ?

It's a compromise between Light (250) and Heavy (300).

Would like to know how many shots it took to hit 2500 yards and what bullet. I like the design though compared to my savage 110 FCP 338LM.

In the video it shows they are utilizing Hornady "Match" Ammo. My bet would be they are shooting the 285 gr ELD-M at the longest distances. Check Hornady's site and it is possible they are using the 250 gr BTHP but I would be surprised if they weren't using their latest and "greatest" 285 gr ELD-M.

There's also the possibility that Ruger Hand Loaded specific loads for the longest shots. You might give Ruger a call, and ask. They might give you the details.

I would also bet that the 2500+ yd shot had a higher MOA Picatinny Rail, than what comes stock on the gun.
