Your turn in the barrel is coming, so laugh at those kids now, while you can.........I know that right now you are saying to yourself "No Way am I going to be that stupid....".............you will soon enough be one of them.

I think it's been covered, but as has been said before, don't stress it now, if you think it's a big deal, go out and shoot some clays right handed, get used to the feel of shooting righty. Other than that, your DI's will have the rest covered, you WILL learn to shoot how they want you to.

Yes, I was in boot camp with a couple guys that had your problem. To fix it they listened to the PMI's and qualified. Like I said before PMI's know what to do. If someone teaches you the wrong way then the PMI's will have to "unteach" you it. The PMI will tell you that some of the best shooters are the ones that have never touched a gun. Because they dont know what they are doing and just listen to the PMI, and dont have bad habits to "untaech" . The only thing you can do is ask your recruiter if he knows someone that is a PMI.

In the past year however i have started shooting a lot more with pistols, and AR-15s. My question is, seeing that i shoot left handed but i recently found out i have right eye dominance, should i learn to shoot right handed before i go to boot camp? I heard that they train you to shoot with your dominant eye, not your hand. Right now i shoot a pistol with my right eye closed and its kind of awkward. So should i start shooting righty with a pistol and a rifle?

You should shoot a rifle with your dominant eye for qualification. You should also be able to shoot lefty and righty, as you may have to do it turning corners etc...

With a pistol, just tilt your head a little to use the dominant eye and your strong hand.

FWIW, I am VERY left-eye dominant. I can do OK with a rifle shooting righty, but when I want to really shoot, I go lefty, especially at long range or with iron sights.

Oh, and you will have enough time snapping-in during boot camp to easily get over the left-to-right switch.

Have you actually been accepted for enlistment or is this just something you are planning to do next year? If you are still in the planning stage, you might want to go get your eyesight checked first to make sure that everything is in good shape.

In either case, good luck.

And run, run some more, and run with a book bag on with some sand in it. If you are physically fit enough so that the PT side of things does not wear you down, you have much more left in the tank to learn faster. It seems that everyone I know who had a miserable time in basic, or whatever the current term is for your training in period, did not go in fit enough to manage the running, jumping etc AND manage the learning curve. You will be sore and in pain, but if all you want to do is die in your rack, then learning anything becomes a chore.

The body and the brain have limits on how fast it can adapt to new things. if you get the body ready before, the brain has more ability to learn.

so go run, or get some snow shoes and get your legs in shape on the snow or cross country ski, quit the ciggies and the beers, and get yourself in the best shape you can imagine.

I'm cross dominant as well. Very left eye dominant, and shoot a pistol right handed. Once an instructor told me, as goalie mentioned above, to lean over a bit and use my left eye, my shooting improved drastically.

Being a career Marine was not in the cards for one particular recruit.

Every time he took his turn at the rifle range, he'd lift his rifle, aim at the target, fire -- and hit some tree way off in the distance.

One day, despondent after claiming a number of trees but no targets, he said to the Gunny, "I think I'll just go and shoot myself."

"Better take a couple of extra rounds," the Gunny shot back.

There were 3 bullet holes in the bathroom ceiling at the Camp Hansen rifle range.

Like I said above, I am cross-dominant, and I had no trouble shooting in the Corps. I shot lefty (with my good eye) most of the time, but I shot expert with the M16 right-handed before as well.

All BS aside, the BEST thing you can do to fix it is to not do anything until you go to boot camp. The US Marine Corps has been teaching people how to hit what they aim at with a rifle for a long, long time. They know what they are doing. Anything you do now will likely need to be un-learned during basic, and, to be quite honest, teaching someone who is a clean slate is a helluva lot easier than teaching someone who has already shot rifles and has already learned differently than how the Marines want you to shoot.

And the people above giving the advice to get in shape are 100% correct. It is easier to learn how to be a Marine if you arrive with a decent level of fitness.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

I felt sorry for the lefties in the Army, as a medic I treated a lot of 2nd degree hot brass burns. I don't know if the new uniforms are better, but the last generation blouse caught hot brass very well.

Learn to shoot right if you can, the worst is when one hangs up in your kevlar strap, instant scar.

The new uniforms have a fancy collar to shield your neck when you are wearing your armor.... it is also a perfect place for hot brass to collect.
