3/4 of States Are Now Stand Your Ground; only 12 Are Duty to Retreat
I wrote about this several months ago, but several states have gone stand-your-ground since then—Ohio, Arkansas, and now North Dakota—so I thought I'd repeat it. [UPDATE: For more about a twist on the duty to retreat, the duty to comply with negative demands, see this follow-up post.]

[A.] The "duty to retreat" is something of a misnomer (though a very common one); it's not actually a legally binding duty (the way a parent has a duty to support a minor child, or a driver has a duty to exercise reasonable care while driving). Rather, it's a provision that, under certain circumstances, failing to retreat from a confrontation will effectively strip you of your right to use deadly force for self-defense.

Was or is there any effort for stand your ground legislation on MN. If ever there was a time, It’s now.

How the hell do you figure the communist regime in power would let that happen?

Yes, every year. Just this week workign with our allies, we made an attempt to amend Stand your Ground onto the 2021 Omnibus Public Safety Bill - the House DFL used a rule to strike it down.

We did have up/down votes on this in the last legislative biennium. See http://gunowners.mn/scorecard to see how folks voted

Thanks,

I am a Life Member of MN Gun Owners Caucus.

COVID hasn’t allowed much activity to happen at the Capital lately. Looking forward to some pro gun rallies soon.

The most important things to do to move legislation forward:

  • Take action in the Action Center
  • Call your Rep / Senator and talk with them about the bills you support. Better yet, setup time to chat 1:1 with them, even if they are anti-gun.
  • Goto their virtual town halls and apply pressure (do in person events when you can, when they are being held)
  • If they support your position, donate to them, volunteer if you can, keep in regular contact
  • If they oppose your position, find a credible opponent in 2022. Donate to them, volunteer with their campaign. Make sure the incumbent knows why you are supporting their opponent.

Rallies are great events with lots of energy. The press gets soundbites and everyone gets a chance to be with others that support the cause. Unfortuantely, they do little to move legislation along.
