Caliber for predator/varmint hunting

What caliber and platform are you guys using. I'm having a debate with a Fudd who thinks AR platform is ridiculous and he thinks, not based on experience, that .22 bolt is all you should need. I think he is trolling me......it's working....

Depends on what varmint or predator you are after and at what distance.

I typically use an AR set up in .223 for yotes, but people hunt them with anything.

Depends as well on if you want to save the pelts.

I used coyotes at 100 to 150 yards.

I used my RPR 338LM to shoot my last coyote - did not save anything - not worth saving anything - 260 yards 300 grain Accubond.

Normally I use a 25-06 to exterminate, or a 243 with 80 gr FMJ if I want to save the pelt (sold the 243).

In my experience, the AR platform is the only way to go - for hunting prairie dogs. My friends and I have been going out west hunting P. Dogs for years. We have on occasion invited out someone who swears by a bolt action rifle, after 1 week with us shooting our AR's they have ALWAYS added an AR (.223 Rem. same as we shoot) ad show up with that as their primary P. Dog platform. Always! I have built myself 3 AR-15's that I use for P. Dog hunting and last summer built one in .204 Remington. For hog hunting down in Texas and Florida, I built another AR15 in 6.5 Grendel. It's a real hammer! I also use it on Coyotes mainly because I have an Atlas HALO LR-50 thermal mounted on it but it's an over kill. Any of my other AR-15 platforms will work perfectly for Coyotes though.

H do you now need to add Beretta in front of the two Hs?

A 243 with 95 gr SST will do the job well. Oldman using his 338 LM sounds even better.

I was thinking more of the 20 inches at 150 and the 40ish at 200 on a moving target that needs a precise hit with the energy left. Not within my comfort zone.

.22 was too light for that range. Basically, I think the guy is an idiot. His counter argument was that if I was doing it right a shotgun would be all I needed and a .22 would work at the distance a shotgun would work. The key is how close in you could expect to call them in. If you are close enough, a steak knife would work, but that isn't realistic.

He is definitely a Fudd. Believes the government is really out to make everyone safer.
