KYL & Ethical hunter Challenge from Erik Cortina

Postby Zarthan on Sat Dec 21, 2024 6:52 pm

I have been following the Know Your Limits challenge that Erik is hosting.
He has a series of KYL or Blackjack Challenge videos but has started adding an Irons challenge.
This looks impossible to me as seeing a 2" square with iron sights at 500yds is virtually impossible I would doubt I could see the 4" square let alone hit it, if you hit all the targets you get $5000.
First episode with irons is #8.

What can you see with the mark1 eyeball?

There are some very nice rigs but wind and spotting your misses at 500yds is a challenge.

Update;

Erik Cortina just did a new KYL\Blackjack video with 4 guys and 3 have irons.
The second guy did really well and hit the 12", 10", 8" in the wind.
It would be nice to see an experienced High Power shooter try with irons.

Hitting the 2" target at 500yds would be easier than seeing it with irons. I suspect it would take more intuition and luck than actual skill.
I will never apologize for being an American.

To win the money you need to make what, 6-7 consecutive shots of a sub 1/2 MOA target at 500 yards.

I think more than a few folks could do it in a tunnel without wind at all. In a cow pasture in Texas? I doubt anyone can do so repeatedly- as in make his clean run 2 out of 3 tries. Wind judgement is that hard. Off by what, an eighth of a mile per hour on your wind call and you miss.

Note that Cortina himself hasn’t done it even once yet.

Heck, I don’t think I even have a true 10+ shot 1/2 MOA rifle, much less the ability to shoot at range that well.

If I had to do it with irons, I would go up, measure the target array and adjust windage on the smallest target I could see, and shoot the same target with sight adjustment to move to the smaller targets.

But I know already that my wind judgment skills would doom me to failure for the money.

I might be able to get a plain blackjack in his challenge with a big scope and watching where my impacts went. On my best day.

Simple challenge to defeat ….

Stalk closer, I bet a 2 in target doesn’t have a good nose, ears, or eyesight.

Never been that good at long range. My eyesight isn't good enough to do much of anything past 300 yards. Give me a solid rest and good glass I can hold my own, but nothing close to what I could when I was younger.

As kids my brother and I would set pop bottle caps on fence posts to shoot. My favorite was to start at about 20 yards and each time you hit a cap you walked 10 steps back. I was good to around 80 yards. My brother could make consistent hits out to 100 yards. We used a Winchester 62A and 22 longs because that's what Grandpa supplied us with.
