How to train for a steel shoot

Postby Belgiboy on Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:32 pm

I'm planning to attend one of the upcoming steel shoots. Being an absolute noob in that sort of thing, I would love some pointers on how to prepare for that. With a handgun, I have been nothing but a paper puncher so far. What I've been doing lately on the range is putting a 5-spot target at 30 feet and shoot 2 mags at each spot (16 rounds of .45). Mostly I can hit the black (4"diameter) with 14 out of 16 shots. This is of course very slow fire and not drawing from a holster. How can I change up my routine to be better prepared for a steel shoot? Reminder, I have no place to shoot in winter but Bills or BPR, so what I can do is limited by their range rules. If you have any equipment, clothing or any other recommendations, those are very welcome too.

Do as I say, not necessarily as I do. After double and triple check to be sure you have no live ammo in the gun, any magazines or in the general area, practice drawing, dry firing and mag changes at home.

First off you need to be dressed in all 5.11 or Blackhawk gear to intimidate the other shooters and start talking sh*t right from the time you get there.............

Really just show up expecting to have fun. Transition drills will help, but are tough on a single shooting point indoors to practice. Have you used a timer? That may be the biggest thing to get use too.

F-that man - you have to be smack talking on the WAY to the shoot and be tacticool dressed....

Seriously -

You should practice consuming copious amounts of highly alcoholic beverages safely away from any guns or ammo....

No Really ---

Just learn to draw SAFELY and RELOAD efficiently and use your front sight when you shoot and most importantly - don't listen to any of the smack talking - it is all in good fun...

Dude - I am so gonna kick yer but this summer... :D . see it is starting already (joke) steel shoots are all about having a good time.

Here I thought the Smack talk started in this forum about three months before we can actually go out ;).

Listen to the above and remember that slow is smooth and smooth is fast... Saftey first speed later. Also remember that a slow hit beats a fast miss every time.

Me, I am going to play with a dualing tree on sunday;)

Timer?? I've used a cooking timer a lot, and here in the lab when I run pregnancy tests I use a timer too... So I'm covered?

I have a 5.11 BDU belt to keep my Zubaz from falling off, because if my Blackhawk goes down... that is embarassing not only in tactical situations, so check that off too.

Smacktalking... that is more difficult for a foreigner with an accent... Not a cool accent like Scottish or Jamaican... Sh*t, better watch some Bruce Willis or Chuck Norris, Lee Ermey is pretty good too.

Alcoholic beverages, Dudes, check my avatar. I've been drinking that legally since I was 12, none of you stand a chance.

'Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast'.... Confusing... maybe they mean that I should add fiber to my diet to keep everything smooth and fast. I'll munch lots of bread, cereal, carpet, rice and Jimmy Johns #9

Practice magazine changes? I was gonna use my Garand... they must mean clip changes, people get those two things confused all the time, bless their hearts

<sigh> I need a helmet

All you need is some running shoes, a lot of stairs, and a walk in meat frig.

I know none of you are going to believe me but that was justaguy's daily training procedure for the last half of the 70's.

Sorry HammAR, I just don't know the right term. Don't make me choke myself.
