Favorite Non-1911 Carry in 45?

The DAO is not meant to be carried to be cocked/locked as suggested though, is it?

The Sig DAK has no provision for cocked and locked. It is DAO, just like a DAO revolver. And... it is a fairly sweet trigger pull with 2nd strike capability.

I carry a Springfield XD .45 Compact and it works amazingly well.

It's fairly compact, holds 10+1 rounds, and it a great gun in a stress situation since there is no manual safety you have to fiddle with. The gun has a back strap and trigger safety to when you're aiming the gun it is ready to go. It has a decent trigger and the felt recoil isn't bad for a .45 of this size.

If you're not going with a 1911, why a .45? There's a recent thread here somewhere that explains the effects the common calibers have on people... To paraphrase, it says the differences between 40,45,9 is splitting hairs, and it makes a convincing argument that the MORE ammo in the mag the better. You might have your reasons for a 45... just something to consider.

Sunday afternon I was west of the Cities for a family deal and wife's niece asked me about finding her a gun. I said she was married now and that was her hubby's job. I was partially joking, but it opened the topic of guns and I was surprised to discover that two of the cousins in law both carried Vaquero's in .45 colt. Both used inside waist band holsters and both were loaded with the old 255 grain Winchester Silver Tip HP loads.

So when discussing .45's don't leave those out either. I for one would carry an older 3 inch model 25 N frame if I could find one for less than a house payment

I carry a Glock 21 (full size .45) in a IWB holster made by Srigs. Fits me just as comfortably, if not more so than when I carry a Glock 19 (compact 9mm) IWB in the same position. Worn about 4 O'clock on the right side.

traded a Ruger P90 in on it, and I definitely would not have carried that gun, simply due to personal preference.

So would you consider a DAO with no safety roostered whenever chambered as well? It would do the same thing.

Not at all the same thing, with the dao you have an extremely long trigger pull, that is most of the time (yes, I know, not all the time) going to be, or at least feel much heavier than the glock's trigger. Much less prone to ND (IMHO). With the Glock if you have a round in the chamber, the "hammer" is engaged. If you pull on the trigger the pistol will fire, with a relatively light trigger pull. Granted from the factory it's no 2 1/2lb match trigger, it certainly isn't 8 lbs with an inch and a half pull either. Since the Glock will not fire DA ............Yes, I know that some of you will try and tell me it's a "hybrid" or 1/2 DA and 1/2 SA but it's not. It is by definition a SAO firearm. If you are carrying with a round in the chamber, you are essentially carrying a SAO firearm roostered, one in the chamber. Just like the 1911, but sans manual safety. How do you like them apples?

A DAO would do precisely the same thing. It would feel different because of the extra weight, but if you pull the trigger on a loaded chamber, it will go bang.

Just trying to see if "roostered" meant what I always thought it did, or if there was some other meaning. From your follow-up I see that we're on the same page, but your first statement said something completely different.

Actually, the way I understand the definition the Glock is a sorta hybrid. The definition of double action as I understand it is that each pull of the trigger roosters and then releases the trigger, i.e. performing two actions. A single action trigger pull just releases an already roostered hammer or striker, therefore performing a single action. The Glock trigger pull finishes roostering the already partially roostered striker before releasing it, and thus could be called a "single and a half" action trigger.

MMmmkay. That's all well and good, but do this. Take a Glock, clear it, safe direction it, and dry fire it. Without racking the slide, pull the trigger again. Let me know what happens.

If the hammer doesn't fall a second time, as far as I'm concerned, its a single action firearm.

I carry either my Taurus PT145 (.45 acp) in a Fobus, Glock 23 (.40 s&w) in a Fobus or .38 snubby IWB depending on situation. All are ready to go.
