GA Discontinues 223 & 308 because of Gov't?

Postby Pat on Sat Mar 14, 2009 7:55 pm

What the devil is this crap all about? From the Georgia Arms web site:

Attention!!

Due to new government regulations concerning the purchasing of surplus brass, we are removing sales of all 223 and all 308 until further notice. Below is a copy of the email we received from Government Liquidations.

"Effective immediately DOD Surplus, LLC, will be implementing new requirements for mutilation of fired shell casings. The new DRMS requirement calls for DOD Surplus personnel to witness the mutilation of the property and sign the Certificate of Destruction. Mutilation of the property can be done at the DRMO, if permitted by the Government, or it may be mutilated at a site chosen by the buyer. Mutilation means that the property will be destroyed to the extent prevents its reuse or reconstruction. DOD Surplus personnel will determine when property has been sufficiently mutilated to meet the requirements of the Government."

It is a liability issue. The Government has strict regulations about the sale of used ordnance and the regs were not being followed. Used brass (and other stuff) was being sold on to remanufacturers with live rounds and /or primers mixed in leading to injuries. People like GA and BHA who buy the used brass are affected but not those who make new ammo.

Everyone who buys ammo, new or reloaded, will be affected by this. The brass is being shredded and the majority of it will end up in China. Ammo grade brass prices will go through the roof.

It was proven that a scrap and mutilate order would cost the government millions of dollars in revenue, where as scrapped cases were worth something like $4000 a ton, it was about $460 for shredded brass. Some of these commercial reloaders are selling back to the government and to other units of government, millions of rounds of ammuntion made on these cases.

Wow I read this and instantly went to check on the situation with my brass order from Scharch and sent off an e-mail. Then I read that the regulation was reverted back to something sane. Quickest burst of anger followed by relief I've ever experienced.
