I started reloading in 1983, so I am definitely not a newbie, and over that time I have noticed a cyclic nature to the availability and cost of components, there has been an overall steady rise in cost but the availabilty has always returned.

Simple economics, the demand will be supplied as long as a profit can be made. The only thing that will prevent that, and it is not always a guarantee that it will be prevented, is government intervention.

Went to Gouger Mt in Lakeville today on a whim and got 2 lb of Bullseye and 1,700 Federal SP Magnum primers. They had some CCI SPP in strips but I left them.

I can use the mag primers in my .38's and am considering cutting the powder in the .40 S&W and trying them in that caliber as well. I won't use a fast powder like Bullseye but Power Pistol instead. I load enough .38's to use them in those however. Ordered another 1,500 bullets from MO bullets.

I'm pretty pleased with my finds today. I'm surprised they had the primers. $3.99/100 isn't a real bargain, but I wanted them and for 1,700 that's about $17 more than I'm used to paying. Not a BFD.

They had some 9mm ammo in stock too!

At 2 p.m. today (4/15/09), Mills Fleet Farm in Lakeville had a pretty good amount of the PMC Bronze .223 on the shelf for $.7.99 a box of 20.
I know its Korean made and was hesitent to buy any. I picked up 2 boxes to try. Left the rest for others. No other .223 on the shelf.
No brass pistol ammo either. They had some of the Blazer aluminum stuff. I did not even check to see what caliber it was. Was not interested.

I was at the WOlf's den today and they have a nice pile of Brown Bear 223, 62 gr for 180/500 and also some silver bear (Brass case?) for 200/500. Nice selection of powder but know he is limiting everyone to one container of powder. No Primers outside of shotgun primers right now.

Same here, I started handloading sometime before my daughter was born and she was born in 1985. The only shortage that I think we may not recover from is some government requirements place on ammunition or components that will drive the availability base on manufacturing, distribution and cost to administer the program.

Gander has unprimed win .223, $40/100, for the first time in months. At $15'ish a box, there's plenty of WWB 5.56 and Rem UMC .233 I'd always called it the "gander tax". Gouger Mountain indeed!

Stopped by the Maple Grove Walmart this afternoon, and all the pistol ammo shelves were bare.

So what's up? Anybody got a real clue as to why this ammo shortage seems to go on without end?

One would think that the hoarders would at some point become complacent.

I know I have mentioned this before and it sounds conspiratorial, but consider our President, our congress and the power of the current lobbies; further, consider current affairs [US arms in the hands of the Mexican drug cartels] and then extrapolate this information to how government contracts may affect manufacturers with just a little pressure.

Hopefully, this is completely wrong, but, it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
