The worst carry pistol is the one you LEFT at home when you needed it. 8-)

I dont care for any .22 as a carry gun ONLY because the rate of failure to fire can be high, Centerfire is a much better choice, that said, ANY gun is better than most, and if 90% of DGU's are simply displaying a weapon and creating the impression that the cost of messing with the holder is too high to risk, then any gun is again far better.

You have to be careful. Brandishing can be a criminal offense in its own right, so you had better have a solid reason to be displaying that gun in a posture where you may consider using it. Brandishing a gun against verbal, but not physically threatening abuse could very well be a criminal offense. My opinion is simple. Don't brandish the gun unless there is a chance that you are going to NEED to use it.

There is not a brandishing law in MN.

There doesn't have to be. Disorderly conduct, public nuisance, etc etc. Plenty of laws can be used to give you a citation. And if you have a carry permit, it is probably more than enough reason to have it revoked.

My top votes ...
- The Derringer
- Taurus Model 22 and other small 22 semi-autos
- Glock

Reasons
The capacity of a Derringer is lacking and the small 22 cals don't have much in the way of stopping power or capacity and I'm personally not impressed by the reliability of the small 22's based on personal experience. Glock ... I just put that in there to bug you Glock lovers & give you hard time... I think they're great personal defense weapons but they just don't fit my hand well ... Just to be clear, I'm JOKING about the Glocks ... the others I really don't like

IMHO,

Flip

My vote is for the Taurus Millenium 9mm pistols (original series)
Cheap plastic trigger (no comparison to a Glock plastic trigger)
37 lb trigger pull...Ok, not that bad but it truly is a heavy and truly awful trigger
Broken springs...twice
Poor customer service...wrong replacement spring sent...twice
Magazines rattle

Now I prefer the Glock 19 when it can be concealed and an NAA Guardian .380 for t-shirt and shorts weather.

An update on this...
I sold my brother in law one of the two that I have(dirt cheap) since he had absolutely nothing else to use. We were sighting in my new AR and we decided to wring out the 9's too. He fired one mag through his PT-111 and the trigger pin backed all of the way out. What a piece of junk. I'll be calling Taurus to send it back. Not sure what they will do to fix it but unless you have absolutely nothing else, I would leave it locked up at home. I would also never sell one to anyone without full disclosure.

Worst... any gun that will not fire EVERY TIME YOU PULL THE TRIGGER!!! Fortunately I have never owned one of these. :P Knock on WOOD!!!

I agree with Fatboy, If it doesn't go bang every time, then how can you be sure its going to go bang when the shtf. If all guns fired Id lean toward the least practical, like a 500 magnum

I'd rather miss with a .500 than with a .22 LR. At least the fireball or shockwave might deter the opponent. Or the exploded ear drums. Though any of the longer barreled .500's make a pretty miserable carry weapon.

If we get literal, and are talking the true definition of a pistol, then the semi-auto's are all we're talking about. So derringers and revolvers are out.

I've never seen a Jennings .22 LR function correctly through a full magazine, so I could put my vote there pretty easy. Not only is it too weak for a serious self-defense gun, but it is a crappy design and doesn't work. I'd be embarrassed to have it even for a paperweight.

If you won't carry it, and can't hit anything with it, then that is your "worst" pistol. This will vary for each individual.

My Dad carries a little Ruger .380. Goes bang every time, but only puts about 6ft/lbs on any target beyond spitting distance. His philosophy is that you can kill an elephant at 100yrds with a .22LR if your shot placement is correct. As a former LEO who shoots pretty much every week, this works for him.

I carry a Witness 10mm with full house loads in it. In a "OHMYGOD" situation, I'm not going to be able to aorta clip a BG with an underpowered load. I'll be able to hit center mass with 2-3 round taps all day long though. Even if I'm lying on my back shooting off-hand. The 10mm works for me as the wound channel it leaves means the BG isn't going to be feeling to keen on engaging in further hostilities with a pair of 180gr XTP's turning his insides to pink tapioca. It's also a pistol I'm willing to carry on a daily basis. Unlike my Taurus 9mm, my S&W .357, or my little S&W Escort.

Granted, if I were able to truly open carry any pistol... It'd still probably be my Witness. Although, I'd probably upgrade to a DEagle .50 as a "over the top" show piece on occasion. I shot some steel silhouette a couple years back with one. I'm not much of a recoil junky, but the blast alone from that thing put a big ol' grin on my face.

My dos centavos...

The worst:

500 S&W: Huge boat anchor of a gun, will make your pants fall down almost immediately, and then you get booked as a flasher. (If you're an old fart like me, they could tack on assualt with a dead weapon!!)

50 AE Desert Eagle: Same as S&W 500: Pants fall down, and then you're a token homeboy. Make sure to wear ugly plaid shorts if you carry this.

FN 5.7 - Heavy, costly gun that shoots 22 caliber bullets that piss off 250 pound meth addicts.

Ruger Alaskan .454: Say goodbye to your eardrums if you pull the trigger indoors, and you can count on the bullet to make it at least next door if not farther. Good choice only if you're a lumberjack who looks and smells like Pat Cannon.

Anything in .25 caliber, unless you are an "urban fur trader" who makes a living selling Beaver pelts to the local residents. Can you say Superfly??

Any two shot derringer, particularly the ******* one George at the Gopher has - it's been dropped twice and has gone off twice inside the bar.

The two shot derringer that is chambered in 45 Colt for one barrel and 45-70 for the other. (!!!!!!!) Comes complete with marshmallow fork and first aid kit for the owner.

A High Point .45, unless you are a fisherman and need a spare boat anchor. It's uglier than me and HammAR put together, and cheaper than whoever it is that shows up at Denny's and always forgets to pay his bill!!

The NAA Guardian that is chambered in a 32 cartridge that is necked down to 25 caliber to get enough speed out of it to at least have over 100 ft-lbs. of energy. Boy, are we impressed!!

Same for the NAA gun that is a .380 cartridge necked down to 32 caliber. Can you say ft-pound scam gun??

The Thompson Encore chambered in .600 Nitro Express. Give it to your assailant, flip him the bird, then piss on his leg, and dare him to shoot you with it.

Same for the Howdah pistol for tiger hunting in the tall grass in India. It's a sawed off double rifle (6" barrels) with a pistol grip chambered in .577 Snider.

Desert Eagle 44 mag with a 14" barrel - (See Gopher OCB photos...) Impossible to draw, but if you carry it IWB all the girls will be impressed with the length of the "package".

Any plastic tupperware gun (w or w/o homebody sights) carried in the waistband of baggy pants without a holster. Can you say Onepac Shapur??

The worst have got to be those little derringers that hang around your neck, clipped into a little holster, pointing straight up at your chin.

That's when you want sucky reliability!

No problem, everyone knows justacan'thitanything is just angry with guns period.

Last fall we tried to help him, so we loaded a 1911 and a Glock,
taped him inside a refrigerator with the loaded guns,
told him to empty both gun magazines (by shooting the guns)........
he emptied both inside the refrigerator.....
and he failed to hit the refrigerator.............
so you draw your own conclusion......

.

Should have just pulled the triggers, instead of dropping the mags I guess!

Just looked at one today, and it made my GLOCK 19 seem like a boat anchor..................... ;)
