Welcome to the dark side SAM! You will find that we here on the dark side have more fun. :D

I'm thrilled with my Pro sized Kimber, It took a tiny bit of tweaking, but I'm up to 5,000 rounds without a hiccup. You are welcome to try it any time! One of the best things about the 1911 platform is that the majority of them are easily, and completely upgradable.

I like Colts first. Springer second. I carry a commander length because it's easier on my car upholstery. Norincos arts excellent starting guns.

I have two Kimbers -
* New Ultra CDP II - this is my normal carry weapon. Conceals well, holds 7 rounds w/ Wilson magazine. I carry IWB with either the Milt Sparks VM2 or a Crossbreed Supertuck. Love it. Once I got it past the breakin period (500 rounds), it shot fine without any issues.

* Used Custom CDP II - took a bit of tweaking to eliminate some FTF and FTRB issues. Stronger recoil spring and some extractor tension adjustments and I was good to go. Pistol was at around 95% when I purchased it in terms of condition.

I like both of these - aluminum frames, weight isn't an issue. Some reliability problems in first 500 rounds then shot fine without difficulty.

I also have a Springfield Mil-Spec that I recently picked up. I'm 200 rounds into it so far - not a single malfunction. I wouldn't carry this on a daily basis because it lacks night sites and is quite heavy, but it's a darn fine gun. I'd go with the "Loaded" or "Operator" model if you were looking to carry one.

Which Pro do you have?

I originally was thinking the Pro CDP II but wound up going with the smaller Ultra sized..

Did somebody say Kimber Pro? What a coincidence!

It has the full size frame ... I already have a Kahr P40 so I didn't need a gun for the exact same niche. The Kimber Tac II (Pro Size) is a step up in size yet with the right holster I can wear it jeans n' t-shirt though not as well as the Kahr. I love 1911's and have always wanted to own one. It's performance has been flawless and it's a thing of beauty. It sees to the needs of security for me and my whole family and I'm glad to own it. I would NOT own it if you are looking for a one-and-only carry piece, but if you already have something smaller than this is a good choice.

Sam,
Welcome to the wide world of 1911s. In short, I own 4 different 1911s and none of them are of the “K” word variety… :geek: I have a Para P12LDA which some would argue is not a true 1911 but 12+1 in a commander size package is nice. I then have an Oly Arms 5 in that Di did a great job shooting on Saturday. A Springer Long Slide (6 inch) Trophy Match is my primary target gun and then an old AMT long slide (7in barrel) just for giggles. To round out the 45 clan I also have an EAA in 45 and a Smith 625. You are welcome to test run any of them. ;) ;) ;)
I am thinking about an STI as the next 5 inch gun. Does anyone have any experience they would like to share on those?

I saw one last Friday that a Gun Shop took in on trade. It looked pretty nice, decent trigger, and felt good in the hand. I'm thinking about going back tomorrow and picking it up. :P

SAM wrote:YODA ( Strad ) and OBIWAN ( Vlad ) and THE FORCE ( 1911 ) got me thinking about a larger caliber. Yes, I'm thinking 1911 and .45 acp. What I need are suggestions for--manufacturer--barrel length--etc., etc.--you know the drill. Thanks in advance for the info, ridicule, scolding, scoffing and general wise-a$$ remarks.

Given the rate of failure of the 1911's at the pin shoot, are you sure you want to go to the Dark Side?........LOL!!

Failure rate? :? the only one I can think of is Munchie's and that's a .40 so it doesn't qualify as a "true" 1911......... (besides, even he admits that the problem was organic and not mechanical)

The vast majority of 1911 faliures I have seen lately have been due to a faulty trigger actuator.

Smith and Wesson 1911's are very nice, even if not true 1911 territory because of the external extractor, but all I have shot, and all I have fondled have been well built, well fitted and include a lot of features that really jack the price up if bought on other competitors guns.

I have springers, Colt's, Kimbers, Balestra molina's, Sistema 1927's, a Nork, a RR, an Ithaca and a Norwegian. I have a P16-40 Para, a p13-45 and a 6-45 para as well. I have shot ed browns, les baers, a few wilsons, as well as RIA, RRA, and a few others.

Really, the best option starts with what are you going to do with it.

carry gun, the 4.25 inch variety of commander is IMHO the best compromise between size and concealability and comfort v reliability.

game gun, 5 incher. they are the most reliable, easiest to get to work right, and they have a bit longer sight radius to make them easier to shoot.

NPE ( non permissive environment) the 6-45 excells. the size of a small Kahr and dead reliable with ball ammo, its a great hideout gun.

A Glock, in rusty hands took 3rd. Was just nice not to reload as much, and thats probably why I placed where I did.

Take baby steps. A 30 rd mag, going down to an 8 round mag is just too extreme. I think you'd like my 13 round mags better. :ugeek:

Ok shameless plug for a G21 over. I've fired strad's Eclipse Pro, as well as Vlad's collection. Those few tools make my Glock feel like I'm shooting an old rusty axe while they're using the latest and greatest Stihl chainsaw.

Thats probably the same reason that my fiance (Vlad, once again, and publicly, thank you again for lending the Oly to her), called my G21 a hunk of junk after she got used to Vlads 6'' Springer. Further, probably had a large part in her ordering a Kimber TLE 5'' as her first pistol.

Regardless of the above, going to .45acp is the way to go for bowling pins. I once had two Glocks. The 9mm left, and the .45 stayed.
