If you trap them in a live trap can you then dispach them? Or do you have to take them out to the country first?

The DNR will allow you to dispatch the trapped critters in a humane way. Yes, shooting is still considered humane (if you can believe that). All firearm laws and ordinances still apply.

However the law does demand that skunks caught in a live trap be moved to the wild and released.

Here is my 2 cents on the subject. If you are brand new to predator hunting, pick up some DVD's on the subject. My personal favorites are from Randy Anderson. You can buy his DVD's and calls together. Mastering the Art from Randy Anderson is a really good place to start. He only demonstrates his calls, but I think he does a great job of covering calling.

Has for gaining land to hunt you can always research for Public Land. It seems to me that it is under used for calling.
I think that a lot of you guys will end up road tripping to hunt. If you think that you found something promising. You can always call the DNR and verify the info.

One last thing, practice your calling. You never need to be perfect, but you should be familar with your calls. I think that you need to be good enough so that you don't sound like you just bought the call the morning of the hunt. I have doubles of some calls. I carry them in my truck and practice on my drive to work. It helps to keep the wife sane.

Put the trap and animal in a garbage bag or wrap it tight with a tarp. Spray inside with starting fluid to dispatch the animal. Put the dead animal in a clean garbage bag and put in garbage. At least, that's what some nuisance trappers do. I personally just drive out of town, shoot the animal, and dump it where the coyotes will find it.

Anyone have a line on where I might find some dead critters(cows, pigs, sheep, etc) to use for bait?

Thought about collecting road-kill for this purpose, but after I talked to someone at the DNR ,that doesn't look very promising. They said I'd need to contact a local CO for EVERY one I picked up.

Wonder if there's a vet who might have some recently deceased kitties available?

I'm gonna throw out there that (with the exception of maybe a deer) that nobody would know, or care, if you just took the random dead crap on the side of the road.

I realize the DNR said you need to call, but in all reality, I doubt they would care.

Anything wrong with the old meat at the butcher counter at your local supermarket? I'm sure you could get a few pounds of burger or some steaks on the cheap if they are just going to throw it out anyways........

Or won't that work? (ETA I'm not trying to be a jerk with this question, I honestly don't know.)

Good point Strad... Also if you go to Cub and ask the butcher they will give you 'dog bones' ... Which are just beef bones/joints with flesh still on it.

Can you bait with meat? You can't use it for Bear baiting, I don't know if this is a cross the board for any type of hunting.

They may be taken in any manner, except with the aid of artificial lights or by using a motor vehicle to drive, chase, run over, or kill the animal. Poisons may not be used except in accordance with all label regulations of the state Dept. of Agriculture and federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Leads me to believe that baiting would be legal.
